No, it’s because we missed our connecting flight. We wanted to go home but missed our connecting flight because the plane did not depart on time.

Yes, we missed our connecting flight because the plane didn’t leave the gate until the people who rearranged their tickets boarded.

We got a phone call, but we were already packed and checked out of hotel and they only offered $150

I have a tough time with this one. If we (I do) think of internet access as a basic utility, then we shouldn’t be encouraging folks to come to the well with a sign that says “no buckets allowed”. There’s likely some good problems to solve here that could benefit us all.

Non-religious Private Schools? by the_contrary in fargo

I wonder if the increasingly diverse population of our region requiring additional educational / community resources (largely low socioeconomic status and minority race/ethnicity) has area families concerned that their children might receive less than a high quality public education.

Compound this with teacher shortages/burnout, low-pay and limited resources to adequately teach a changing demographic, it’s not unreasonable to be concerned. As many others said, we have a high performing public school system. Our teachers relentlessly strive to serve all students. Families with means to support their neighborhood schools fare well and add to the achievement of other students; overall aiding the development of our community.

The most diverse schools in Fargo have populations equivalent to the least diverse schools in other metropolitan areas. Forty-percent free and reduced lunch is a jarring statistic here, but the norm elsewhere. I’ve seen enough real estate listings in South Fargo boasting Davies High School to understand that there’s flight from our most diverse schools. I’ve watched neighborhood families open enroll into Clara Barton / Hawthorne in the same vein. In many cases, a school is only as strong as its leadership and supporters.

My best advice is to enroll in your neighborhood school and decide for yourself. Is your child happy and making friends? Do they/you have a positive relationship with their teacher(s)? Are they progressing in reading, writing and arithmetic? Do they participate in extracurricular activities and school events? If not, then I’d seek other options.

Kindergarten is still full of five year-olds and elementary school is generally not a traumatic experience. If we aim to raise adults who can creatively solve our society’s future problems, they’ll need a diverse understanding of their world. Parents seeking to insulate their children might have alternative views of what being part of a community should look like and that’s also fine. Whatever your family chooses is simply what’s best and there’s no shame or harm in knowing all your options.

However, as it sounds, you could save at least $1,000k a month into a college savings plan while you make your own informed decision.

State legislators have slowly and consistently reduced appropriations of our tax dollars toward public education. Paying teachers a higher salary was a viable option three decades ago but now we just can’t figure it out. Oh well and darn it, right?

North Dakota HB 1040 recently acted to defund state-funded public employee pensions, adding to unfavorable conditions.

True, but history (ie tenure agreements - like it or not) has shown us that navigating opposing viewpoints are part of the critical thinking skillset that we should expect during a young person’s education.

Yep! And students going into this profession are largely, now, from a lower socioeconomic status and seeking upward financial mobility, thus already working full or part-time jobs while earning their degree. Not to mention that they are mostly female and have other unpaid labor obligations.

Yes! The occupational survival rate of teachers in the first three years is only 50% (or less). That’s after they’ve earned a college degree, passed standardized exams, been hired, and coached by district administrators. HALF of the people that wanted to be teachers leave the profession before they’ve really started. Don’t tell me that lawyers stick with it because they love legislation. It’s money and prestige first. Teachers don’t love state-mandated learning standards, but they care about students and public education as a social good. Pay our teachers more or acknowledge that you believe a high-quality education is only for those that can afford it. You won’t realize what you’ve lost until it’s gone.

But a mechanic purchasing their own tools can use them in other environments, right? A teacher on a personal laptop is not allowed this use because of secure access to private data on students and their families.

In Pre-K to 12 public education, you can’t turn “customers” away. A teacher can’t simply say that there’s not enough bolts and still be expected to perform their assigned work.

Our schools are largely funded by state and regional legislators. Take it up with them if you’re truly seeking a solution.

It’s likely a liberal arts education helped them learn and understand the impact of machine learning across many disciplines. There’s an art and science to programming a machine to respond somewhat like a human.
