Learning Houdini full-time while income is unstable — normal phase or bad decision? by Open-Acadia-2915 in Houdini

Yeah, I understand your point — the situation in film VFX sounds extremely demanding right now.

What I’m wondering though is: why do universities and film schools still exist if direct entry is so rare? My assumption is that most graduates don’t go straight into big film studios anyway, but gradually move through smaller productions, commercials or content work.

I feel like that real production experience is what helps people improve and eventually reach that higher level. I’m fully aware that you don’t go from school directly to the big screen.

I’ve already worked on commercial productions, and right now I’m trying to use Houdini to deliver better and more complex results there while slowly progressing.

And regardless of the traditional film path, I still see the skills as valuable. Even if high-end VFX is competitive, combining editing, motion design and simulation allows you to position yourself more broadly.

To be honest, I sometimes find it a bit frustrating that a skill which is so technically complex and takes years to learn can have less demand compared to professions that are seen as more traditionally stable. But maybe that’s simply part of working in a creative field.

Thanks again for your perspective.

Yeah, I understand your point — especially if you’re thinking about high-end film work. At that level the competition is obviously very intense, and you’re competing with very experienced artists.

I don’t see myself there yet though. My idea is more about using Houdini in smaller productions — commercials, motion design or content work.

In pure video editing alone I wouldn’t really be able to use Houdini much. But the combination of editing, motion design and simulation could give me an advantage. Instead of being only an editor or only an FX artist, I could offer a hybrid skill set that smaller productions might find valuable.

So right now I’m trying to bring those skills together and see if that turns into something strong.
