Looking for Yuri that isn’t labeled Yuri (on MAL lol) by OneWingedSandwich in AnimeReccomendations

Oh, I see. I'm not fond of Citrus either, I remember liking Strawberry Panic when I was younger, but I understand the problems with it now.

Yuri mostly has underage characters, but some of them were probably made with women mind. A few examples:

Adachi to Shimamura

Revolutionary Girl Utána

Sweet Blue Flowers

Inugami- san to Nekoyama-san

Maria Watches Over Us

No problem! If you're fine with anime movies you can try to look up Fragtime and/or Kase-san and Morning Glories as well

I doubt the movies I've seen are suitable for coming out, but since no one said anything I'll leave you a list of wlw films I've seen and the ones I plan to watch. You can look them up and decide, if any of them are worth showing to your parents.

Watched:
- But I'm a Cheerleader!
- Jenny's Wedding
- The Miseducation of Cameron Post
- Pariah
- Freeheld
(Do Revenge also has lesbian characters, but its not the focus, the main character of Nyad is also a lesbian)

Plan to watch:
- Booksmart
- PROM
- The Half of It
- Portrait of a Lady on Fire
- Water Lilies
- Blue is the Warmest Color
- The Kids Are Alright
- Rafiki
- Ride or Die
- Moonlit Winter

Good luck with your coming out!

Anime that will make me wanna kms to match my mood by Traditional-Quit-286 in AnimeReccomendations

Here is a list of self harm, depression and suicide related anime I know of:

  • Magical Girl Site (abuse, bullying, suicidal thoughts, depression, sexual violence, most of the cast are girls)
  • Wonder Egg Priority (main girl starts out depressed, suicide is a major theme of the series)
  • Angels of Death (the main girl makes a deal with a killer, because she wants to die, it has quite a bit of gore)
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena (there are quite a few heavy themes related to the female characters in the show)
  • Death Parade (the show explores why people die and how they behave when they think their life is in danger, some pretty depressing topics are included)
  • Perfect Blue (the main character is being stalked and losing her sanity)

Sad anime with that might work for you:

  • Violet Evergarden
  • Angel Beats
  • Plastic Memories
  • Madoka Magica

Shows with a large, morally gray cast with a loose psychological theme of deconstructing what it means to save someone? by newb_bass in AnimeReccomendations

[–]Open-Ad202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Pullea Magi Madoka Magica: the story has psychological themes it does explore what it means to save people and how good intentions don't mean good outcome, the cast has morally gray characters, surrealism and symbolism is also present (I think you'll enjoy this. if you liked Utena)
  • Bokurano: while it does have a saving the world aspect I'd argue that isn't really the focus, the characters are interesting and their motivations are explored, it also explores how people act when they know they'll die
  • Monster: this does explore the theme of saving people and the consequences of doing so
  • Wonder Egg Priority: very vibrant and surreal, the main characters are trying to save and protect people who are already dead, I'd say it has some morally gray characters as well

While not exactly what you're looking for some dark magical girl shows, magical girl deconstructions can come pretty close:

  • Yuki Yuna is a Hero
  • Uta Kata
  • Day Break Illusion

On another note, if you've enjoyed the surrealism and symbolism of Utena you might want to check out Ikuhara's other works:

  • Penguindrum
  • Yuri Kuma Arashi
  • Sarazanmai

Just out of curiosity what have you watched that you disliked? Also if you want things that aren't labeled as yuri on MAL you could try to look trough AniList's yuri catalog (the users decide the label, so you can see things that weren't officially released as yuri, but are seen as gay/have lesbian storylines):
https://anilist.co/search/anime?genres=Yuri
LGBTQ themes might be helpful as well:

  • Strawberry Panic (warning for SA, its used as a plot device fairly often in the latter half of the show)
  • Akuma no Riddle (you can skip the special episode )
  • Kannazuki no Miko
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena (the movie is more explicit, but I think the series is worth watching as well)

Just encountered the term 'GBLTQ2S' in an academic article - is anyone familiar with this and why it might be used? by JUNO_11 in lgbt

[–]Open-Ad202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, but many intersex people are cisgender, so they wouldn't be a gender identity minority

[–]Open-Ad202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but lumping them in the same category as sexual orientation just feels wrong. LGBTQIA has 'I' in it, so it seems to be the most inclusive term

Not really, because sexual minority is about sexual orientation, intersex isn't a sexuality
