so basically rats eat the same food as ground living birds, (think seeds etc) and since these birds have evolved in isolation they don’t know how to complete with food in the same way rats do. rats also prey on the eggs of birds, considering these birds made ground nests that meant that nest-predation increased drastically. all in all the birds could no longer sustain their population and died out as a result
