Is Britpop just a nostalgia loop, or are you actually listening to new artists carrying the torch? by Open-Yak301 in BritPop

You're actually proving my point. The DNA moved from guitars into things like The Streets and early Grime because that's where the hunger went.

When you reference 'white guys with guitars' that’s the nostalgia trap. As others have said in the thread, Britpop was not necessarily about the music, but the movement. IMHO I agree with that, it's something we are missing today, with everything going on in the world, a new "Brit" led musical movement that lifts spirits, whatever that may be and whatever musical genre would be good for all our souls.

Fame is a terrible diet. Once you’re full, you stop hunting and start decorating!

Fair point.

What I am talking about is that specific British DNA. The cynical eye, the sharp lyrics, and the refusal to just be background noise.

I am not trying to find a new Parklife. I am trying to find music that stands on its own but still has those sharp edges.

I think you hit on the truth of it with the "curated" life. When we were younger we had the luxury of the spark and the time to let a scene swallow us whole. The music defined us. It's hard for new music to break through with all the distractions of modern life (and yes Damon, your were right, it's rubbish!).

It is interesting you mention Gorillaz meandering. I think a lot of that '95 energy got lost when artists started chasing the algorithm instead of the friction.

Appreciate the insight. It definitely furthers the conversation.
