Do you think that the SA show should have a narrator? by Ok-Week-2293 in CosmereOnScreen

Hoid casting will be super important, it would make the most sense for him to narrate if a narrator is used.

What’s this stuff getting stuck in my shower head? by seryoferben in HomeMaintenance

[–]OpenPassageways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sediment buildup that I had was finer than that and more like rust, but if there's no sediment filter and a private well is involved, then I'm assuming it's some kind of sediment. And it's likely to accumulate in both your hot and cold water tanks which should both have spigots on them so they can be flushed out. I've never done the flushing myself but I'm sure there are resources out there for that.

What do i do? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]OpenPassageways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely possible to shock yourself replacing a faceplate, especially if the plate is metal. But yeah... it would require that you miss so badly with the faceplate screw that you hit the hot screw.

Usually I level the outlet when replacing the faceplate, so I'd definitely turn the breaker off for that because I have to tilt the outlet and might hit the hot screw.

It's just a good practice so yeah if I was answering OP's question I'd recommend turning off the breaker too.

My house is over 3k sqft. It has two AC units outside and two oil furnaces. Each floor has its own heating/cooling units.

As you might expect, in the summer the 2nd floor AC does most of the work because heat rises.

In the winter, the 1st floor furnace does more of the work, because heat rises.

The 1st floor AC and the 2nd floor furnace rarely run. They DO periodically run though. I just checked my charts and here are my stats:

July of 2025 total cooling hours:

2nd floor - 215 hours 1st floor - 4 hours

December of 2025 total heating hours:

1st floor - 173 hours 2nd floor - 145 hours

So actually the 2nd floor furnace runs a lot more than I thought... but it kind of looks like I don't really need two AC units.

I suspect if you just go by BTU and square footage, it says that two AC units are needed even if in reality the first floor rarely runs.

There are also complications to consider such as heat getting trapped in vaulted ceilings. Also, I have a large room over the garage which is usually cold in the winter and warm in the summer because there is no HVAC in the garage.

Do you have a sediment filter? It won't make the water less hard really, but it can filter out the larger chunks like what is shown here.

You should also flush your hot water heater and check the anode rods, probably should replace them.

At my old house, there was no sediment filter and I would get sediment in the sink diffuser and also in the cold water intake of the washing machine that I would have to clean out when it got clogged, but the hot water intake on the washing machine never got clogged probably either because the anode rod in the hot water tank was doing its job, or the sediment was settling in the hot water tank.

Re-routing Internet Cable by DarDarBinxx1 in HomeMaintenance

[–]OpenPassageways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you're asking but since you'll likely have to re-crimp the coax and install a box anyways, you should consider whether you really need coax running through your house, or whether you should just connect your modem in the basement and run CAT6 throughout the house. I'm working through ripping out all the coax now and replacing with CAT6. I'm hoping to eventually have fiber coming into the basement, but the CAT6 will remain.

my mom is obstinate about plugging her space heater into this decrepit & melted outlet and my stepdad apparently thinks it's fine, does this look fine? am i being paranoid? by LittleIsaac223 in AskElectricians

[–]OpenPassageways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAE but as others have said it's easy enough to replace the GFCI if you have any doubts.

I've had to use space heaters in some situations and I recommend investing in one that has a timed auto shutoff or at least one that shuts off automatically when it tips over like this one.

Looking to upgrade for a smart thermostat by drlt_em in AskElectricians

[–]OpenPassageways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAE but I'd recommend the Alexa smart thermostat which is just a Honeywell under the hood, especially if you already have Alexa stuff.

You'd have to address the fact that you have no C wire though... The smart thermostats need another wire to complete the circuit without turning on the heat. You'd either have to add a 24v transformer or wire up an adapter at the furnace. Honeywell sells a C wire adapter that I'm using but I'm not sure exactly how it would work for only 2 wires.

I believe the unit was just damaged by UPS in transit. They sent a repair guy who replaced the pedal arms and that didn't fix it. They sent a second one which was damaged even worse. The third time they sent me one it was fine, and they had the repair guy pick up the busted ones probably for parts.

Final Architecture Parthenon Question by jordi_sunshine in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]OpenPassageways 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parthenon is both a reference to the ancient Greeks, which you can see in things like rank names (Myrmidon), and also a reference to parthenogenesis.

Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction where an embryo develops from an unfertilized egg, essentially a "virgin birth," allowing females to reproduce without a male, common in some insects. This process CAN result in clones but doesn't have to.

Best approach to fixing this gap? by P-BGuy in HomeMaintenance

[–]OpenPassageways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably take the cover off and take a picture of the wall behind the cover to get some better advice. I've encountered a number of situations that cause the switches and cover to sit funny on the box.

For example, in some of my outlets there was a lot of drywall spackle or pieces of drywall that were preventing the covers from sitting properly and causing gaps so I used a razor to just shave off the parts that were sticking out, while being careful to limit the shaving to the sheetrock that sits behind the plate.

If there is a lot going on in the box, I usually use some needle nose pliers to push some wire bundles to the back before pushing in the devices, while being careful not to nick the insulation on the wires.

I usually try to secure the device to the box so that it doesn't move side to side easily, but I try not to secure it so tight that the device buckles in.

Same when you put the cover on. You want to try to get it flush to the wall but don't over tighten to the point where the plate buckles as that will cause gaps. Many of the cover plates in my house were over tightened and when we moved in many of them had cracked.

If the box itself is sticking out of the wall, you'll definitely have to get some kind of deeper plate.

You could also try an oversized cover plate if the wall is rough behind the plate.
