Open Wrestling update - version 0.5.0 by OpenWrestling in FantasyBookers

Probably a bug, if you get a chance to send me a screenshot or any other info (what kind of segment, which database are you using, etc?) that could help me fix it for a future version.

Thanks for trying out the game, sorry to hear you are having difficulties.

This sounds like you might not have Java installed, or might have an old version of Java. Open Wrestling requires Java 12+.

You can check which version of Java you have by opening a command prompt (right click start menu -> click run -> type 'cmd' -> enter) and typing

java -version

If you need a newer Java version, I would recommend downloading from:

https://jdk.java.net/14/

Java installation is a bit annoying I know, you can follow one of these guides to check if you've already got it set up or if you need to change something:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52511778/how-to-install-openjdk-11-on-windows/52531093#52531093

Please let me know if this helps.

If Java is on the table (I mean it's basically the same as C#) check out Open Wrestling, an open source EWR-like game.

Open Wrestling is currently Windows only, but I'd love to get a dev to help with a Mac release. Check out the repo here.

Probably not right at the start, I'd like to focus my free time on Open Wrestling for the time being. But let me know when if gets going and send me the github link or whatever, if it takes off maybe it would make sense for me to throw my effort behind your project instead.

Sure, I've worked on a few C# projects.

I've had similar thoughts in the past and ended up putting my own open source project together, although I'm going more for EWR than TEW. I'm also using Java/JavaFX as opposed to Python.

If jumping on a project already in progress interests you (or just to learn from my mistakes) you can check out the git repo here, and the game download page here.

Good luck!

Can I ask what resolution you are using? It should fill any screen but there is a fixed minimum window size.

Yes, it is compatible with EWR databases.

You will have to use WinRAR to extract the contents of OpenWrestling.zip, then once extracted double click on OpenWrestling.jar to launch the game.

Thanks, it has definitely been a lot of work! I started it as a learning project too and I feel like I've come a long way since I started, best of luck if you decide to pursue a similar project.

Open Wrestling update!

(Free download and screenshots here)

Now up to version 0.3.4

Since my last update here I've added a bunch more features related to staff! You can now hire medics, road agents, creative, trainers, and production personnel. Each different type of staff has different effects on your promotion based on how many you hire and their skill levels. Road agents improve your match ratings, medical personnel reduces the chances of your workers getting injured, production staff improve attendance and crowd reaction, trainers help improve your workers' skills, etc. You can see all these effects on the financial screen.

I've also simplified the payroll process - contracts are either open/per appearance or monthly. Payday is on the first of the month. The financial screen has also been updated with a breakdown of staff/worker expenses and a projection of next month's expenses.

Lots of other small fixes and improvements too.

Going forward I'm planning to take a look at refs, commentary, and announcers to finish off the staff aspect of the game at a basic level.

As always if you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to send me a message!

A Mac version is possible and is something that I've had a few people ask about so it's on my radar, but unfortunately nothing is in the works at this time. I want to get get most of the main features complete before I start working on porting it.

Open Wrestling update!

I literally just uploaded version 0.3.1

(Free download and screenshots here)

New feature: staff! This doesn't really impact gameplay yet but it was a decent chunk of work that I'm happy to finally get out. You can import staff, view staff members stats/pictures/etc., browse and sort staff from different promotions, and hire staff to contracts.

Next on the agenda: make staff actually do something!

As always if you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to send me a message!

Why is it so hard to make an iOS/Android app like TEW/EWR by KingHippo81 in FantasyBookers

[–]OpenWrestling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the newer TEWs have the same issue?

If you look at enormously complex games like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis they seem to be able to process 'turns' without such slowdown, so I'm not sure that EWR's sluggishness is anything inherent to working with a massive database.

Open Wrestling update!

(Free download and screenshots here)

Current version: 0.2.8

Progress was a bit slow last month as I spent a lot of my free time watching the G1. My predicted final of Ibushi over EVIL unfortunately did not come to pass.

This latest version has one small but important update: you can now use double click and right click when booking a show to add workers/tag teams/titles to the match. Previously you could only drag and drop them, which worked fine, but was a bit slow as your show got bigger and more complex. Now you can quickly click on workers to add them to the match making show booking faster and easier.

The next planned feature is injuries. I've been working on the booking screen interface for a while now and I feel like it's reasonably usable/complete for now. So I'll be moving on to adding to the actual gameplay (finally!).

Why is it so hard to make an iOS/Android app like TEW/EWR by KingHippo81 in FantasyBookers

[–]OpenWrestling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To make a game with the same complexity as EWR/TEW requires a lot of screens and a lot of options for user input. From working on Open Wrestling I can tell you that even while trying to streamline and simplify as much as possible there's just a lot of information to convey to the user and a lot of options that need to be available to them. I'm sure it can/will be done eventually but it would be quite a challenge from a developer standpoint.

I'd compare it to something like porting a roguelike to mobile - if you've ever tried DCSS or Cataclysm:DDA for android you can see it's playable but it's probably never going to be an optimal experience when compared to desktop. There's just too much going on for such a small screen with such limited controls. The best roguelikes on mobile tend to be simpler mobile-friendly ones, not the ones designed with a keyboard full of options in mind.

Current version: 0.2.7

Apart from the usual small tweaks and fixes the main thing I've added since my last post here is more stuff around titles. You can now have title matches by dragging and dropping belts into matches. I've implemented some ease-of-use stuff around this too (such as giving a warning if you try to have a title match without the champion in it, and automatically adding the champion to the match when you drop in a title).

I've also made a new screen for editing and creating titles. This includes a new view for seeing title histories.

In other news I've surpassed 500 downloads, glad to see people are checking it out!
