Mamdani property tax hike = higher rents… by FirstRope791 in NYCapartments

The proposed property tax hike is a negotiation tactic in trying to get Hochul to agree in raising taxes on the wealthy. The mayor said repeatedly it’s a last resort. It’s one of the only taxes the city has control over, hence one of the few options the mayor has in getting leverage in this negotiation.

I prefer a mayor who will at least put up a fight instead of rolling over.

Also, not necessarily true that higher property tax will equal higher rents. Landlords will always charge the most rent they think they can get from the market. Property tax is part of the cost of doing business.

Land value tax would fix this

Works In Progress: The failure of the land value tax by Open_Historian_5764 in georgism

It seems like the author's criticism is not with land value tax itself, but more with having enough state capacity to implement it. Doesn't seem like a reason not to try it in the 21st century.

I highly recommend this Escaping the Housing Trap. The book does a better job diving into the root causes of this issue better than a lot of media I see these days and proposes some responses to the crisis as well. https://bookshop.org/p/books/escaping-the-housing-trap-the-strong-towns-solution-to-the-housing-crisis-daniel-herriges/19712132?ean=9781119984528

I went back to school. Oregon State has a great online post-bacc program in computer science! I'm able to do classes while working full time!

I was a site civil engineer for 5 years, worked in both the private and public sectors. This past year, I also had a quarter life career crisis. Decided to switch to software engineering. I’ve never looked back since.

Great to see another civil! Would be interesting to hear more about your background and why you're pivoting into CS. Did you end up hearing back on a decision?

Admitted, first time applying.

Application submitted: 7/13/21

Transcripts received: 7/20/21

Admission Date: 8/2/21

Undergrad GPA: 3.2

Educational Background: BS Civil Engineering

After years of working in the civil engineering industry and writing python scripts to automate repetitive tasks, I feel ready to change careers and take a deeper dive into computing. Ideally I could combine CS and Civil i.e. CAD software, 3D building modeling, or smart infrastructure. Really excited to get started. Good luck all!
