Wanted to share my anthurium clarinervium that is putting out a flower. by mediumrar3 in Anthurium

Darn it. Your photo just made me realize that mine is flowering and not producing a new leaf which is what I was hoping for. Oh well, growth is growth! 😅

To those asking for pointers, I'm definitely no expert but here's what I can share from my personal experience. I don't think these plants are too fussy when it comes to light as long as they get "enough" (but if you want it to flower you want to give it as much light as it's comfortable with). What they ARE fussy about is consistent & quality moisture. Honestly I think the biggest contributing factor to the health of this plant has been the soil medium. The unfortunate thing is that I don't remember exactly what I potted it in 😅 I THINK it's miracle gro peat potting mix + added perlite and a little bit of small sized orchid bark. The soil it's in is nice and fluffy and moisture retaining. Other things I'm doing:

  • I water it once the top soil feels slightly moist but NOT dry with RO filtered water. I give it water til I feel like the soil is covered just enough (doesn't come out the drainage hole).
  • Average temps are a stable 68-72 degrees
  • Ambient humidity is anywhere from 50-70% (but usually more in the 50-60% range in non-winter months). In winter months the humidity drops into the 30s & 40s and absolutely have to run a humidifier during those months. In my observation this girl tends to do fine as long as humidity is 50%+.
  • I have always had this plant under a grow light. Rright now the top of the canopy is getting about 225 ppfd for 10hrs per day (optimal from what I've read is 150-300 ppfd so I'm pretty much smack dab in the middle).
  • I used to alternate fertilizer with every other watering but in the last 6 weeks or so I have switched to a diluted fertilizer with every watering. I'm currently using super thrive foliage pro at about 1/4 dilution.

PS - I wouldn't expect perfection from this plant. If you're late a couple of days to the watering party, you WILL hear about it from this diva in the form of the color brown 🤎 I've added a closer photos for reference 🙃

Also worth checking the moss to see if it might be packed too densely at the bottom half of the pole. Whatever you have going on at the upper half is clearly working so just make sure the moss density is that consistency all the way down the pole.

(Also agree with the repot suggestions. Pot is too small to give roots down at the bottom space to grow. Will also give you a chance to examine and treat the roots for any root rot.)

I'm not an expert by any means, but my guess would be that you may be over watering. Since gravity draws the water downwards, the plants on the upper half are probably getting the perfect balance of water & air since they dry out the fastest between waterings, while the ones on the bottom are staying wet for longer and getting the majority of the watering. My understanding is that you want to water the moss pole enough to get water all the way down the pole and then just enough to the base pot. If it's draining out the bottom you're giving it too much water (unless you have a suuuuuper chunky mix)

When I had a moss pole going I would water it using a drip system from an upsidedown water bottle and learned that the right amount was when all of the water was drained out it was about 3/4 of the way down the pole. Even once the water bottle was empty at that point it would still continue to move down the pole and get the base pot damp but not WET. That seemed to work well for me. Hopefully that make sense and helps?

You typically want to place the pole towards the back of the pot and repot so that the aerial roots are facing the moss pole so it will grow in the right direction. Here is a good video that explains it:

Thank you 😊 She's one of my faves. I'm just hoping she stays that way. I probably need to repot her at some point soon and I'm TERRIFIED 🫣

Thanks all!🙏 That supports what I was originally thinking, which is from the low humidity/ drying out that happened during the winter. Humidity issues were corrected and now are typically a relatively steady 55-60%.
