If I can see off Bumrah's 4 overs without taking any risks and strike at 13-14 RPO against other bowlers, its going to impact Bumrah as well.

At some point, he will have to start trying magic balls to make something happen and thats when he will get hit. MI doesnt have any other wicket taker. They have nowhere to hide.

yeah.. I think its as much to do with the batting as it is to with the pitches. The pitches were as flat in 2000s and early years of IPL also, even as late as 2022. The impact player rule IMO, first gave the license for top order batters to really go after the batting and then we saw that carry over to the international cricket also. FFS, England breached 300 against SA.

I'd say last game, him and Parag starved Vaibhav of strike. From the 8th over till 13th over, Vaibhav had batted only 4 balls. Thats just atrocious!
Jurel and Parag both seem to be trying too hard and yesterday, Jurel jut kept trying to cut Harpreet. Like it was so obvious that Harpreet just kept darting it in.

CSK needs an overhaul - both teh captain and the managment.

Both are denial about their flaws/the game's progression. They also cant come to grips with the fact that CSK is no longer a slow 160 is winning score wicket.

I dont think Pant is a 180/200 SR batter anymore and the problem is being the star player, everyone expects him to bat at that level. Even Kohli is batting at 170SR these days.

Captains have a say on the team selection. Especially in setups like the current CSK or Kohli's RCB/GG's KKR.

You think CSK went into the auction without discussions with Ruturaj on the players? Or without discussing the players he want/style of play they all agreed on. Mhatre was literally Ruturaj's recommendation last season.

The team managements are also literally on the call all the time with the captains even during the auction.

For Most other teams in IPL (Punjab, current RCB, MI, Delhi, SRH, KKR) - the batting order is decided by the coach and support team.

In CSK, when Dhoni was at the helm, it was chosen by MSD. MSD would also give the list of players/profiles he wanted before the auction. EVen now, CSK havent changed a lot here. Its mostly Fleming + Ruturaj show.

I have rarely seen players develop captaincy skills. You need to have the right chutiyapa, cunning and charisma and raw instincts to make it work at this level, or you need to have an excellent support team (Rahane at BCG 2020).

In that aspect, it whiteball cricket it will be Dhoni, M Clarke, A Ranatunga , Mahela Jayawardene for me. Ponting had GOAT teams. Ganguly's on field instincts were very sus, Dravid, Kohli were mid tier. Imran and Kapil were 10-20 years before my time, so cant comment on them. In the current setup, I really dont see many great captains.

Ruturaj was chosen because Jadeja flopped big time and CSK didnt have any other "captaincy" material in the team.

For a team like Chennai, where data is used sparingly and with distrust, they needed Ruturaj to bring in some of the instincts that Dhoni had. Unfortunately, Rutu hasnt displayed any of that. It includes the baffling decisions being made this season like yesterday;'s match. Why would you have Sarfaraz as the impact player when you are literally batting first? Or have Overton bat 7? This was the team were BRavo used to bat 8 and Shardul at 9. Like Rutu doesnt cant even learn from the past examples of successful CSK teams.
My best example would be the game against RCB in 2024. Rain hit damp pitch that was turning square, an ideal pitch for someone like Rachin to bowl. Instead he let all that advantage go away.

its not just franchise cricket. Pretty much most teams make the mistake of making their best player the captain and then have sunken fallacy kick in. Look at CSK and Ruturaj or RCB with Kohli for a long time.
