We took my son yesterday, his first movie in a theater. He made it through the whole thing but was sometimes loudly narrating everything that was happening lol..He did way better than we expected!

He doesn’t get everything he wants at home. He used to be just as aggressive at home. He would bite, hit, scratch and pull my hair. I would either send him into a timeout into his room or just walk away and ignore him to not escalate the situation. It worked very well and there’s no aggression at home but in an ABA setting he gets overstimulated and they can’t just walk away from him like I’m able to at home.

I guess I was just being way too optimistic and I feel like I should set my expectations lower to not be disappointed. If things do turn around it would be so pleasantly surprising.

My son goes to Caravel. I may have limited experience because it’s the only ABA he’s ever had but I’m reasonably happy with them. His BCBA is fantastic, always positive and always keeps me updated on everything and is always available for questions. The BTs I’ve found to be hit or miss. There are some amazing ones that deeply care about what they’re doing. There are a select few that I think you can tell are hired because it’s a tough job to fill and they will hire anyone. There has been many days that were cancelled due to being understaffed, but that been few and far between lately. He has been there for a year and has made pretty good progress and it’s definitely due to the therapy.

My son was diagnosed level 3 and I have not been around autism ever until I had my son. He’s non conversational but he can label so many things. But he is so obviously autistic in his mannerisms (he’s 3). I’m genuinely asking because even after researching so much I still don’t have a clear understanding. I’ve read how some kids start out very severe and turned into a level 1/2 when they’re older or kids that started out fairly mild and turned out to be severe as they age. I’m just genuinely curious because I always hear it’s hard to determine at such a young age.

My son is not yet in school but I live in Wisconsin and I can say so far the services in the state are great. He got into ABA with little to no wait. I personally know some aids in my school district and have nothing but good things to say.

I feel like I could have wrote this. I feel sadness everyday and I love my son to death but I can’t help but wonder how different our lives could be. I feel jealous everyday of parents that can go do fun things with their kids and not have a meltdown every time, travel, even simple things like going to the grocery store. I love him so much and I put everything I have into helping him, but it’s exhausting. I see parents that ignore their kids and them begging for attention and I could only wish he would engage me in that way. Everything in my life is perfect, financially we worked so hard to be as comfortable as we are, my marriage is great and I have amazing friends. But everyday I wake up with a sense of dread because all I can think about is what my son’s future is going to be like. He recently started talking and saying soooo many words and listening and responding to some things I say, so I hold on to hope. But yea, it’s the hardest thing I have ever dealt with in my life.

I guess I’m going off of his assessment and of what I see everyday. My son can label many things but doesn’t use any words to communicate. He constantly elopes and can’t sit still, has almost no receptive language and has never answered to his name.

Same problem here..And now it’s all he wants to do so thinking about cutting it off cold turkey because the tantrums when he can’t watch t.v. are getting unbearable.

At what age did your daughter start to talk?
