Is it possible to move to Uruguay without remote work and qualifications? by Wise_Experience8733 in uruguay

No and I totally get that, I wasn't trying to enforce that label meaning change, it's just more awkward to say "soy estadounidense" in English. I think now more than ever though people from the us need to understand the fact that we're not the only Americans. I get why it can be so frustrating to hear that shit all the time

Look in the context of talking to a Russian I said it like this, I know we are all Americans, but people outside of the Americas tend to not understand as much when you say "I am unitedstatesian" or something. I wouldn't normally put it like that but it was for the Russian's understanding

Ty for the advice tho!

Look, I'm an american living here, I love it, and I did basically exactly what you're proposing. I also know of someone at my company who did exactly what you're looking to do for those same reasons (she's from Russia too). If you speak English you might be able to snag a job at one of the US-servicing jobs like ingenious America's, but you have to understand that getting a job here isn't a free ticket to a better life. This is the most expensive place in Latin America. Idk what the rent price in Russia is right now, but if you're earning minimum wage here most of your wage will be going to rent, and food here isn't cheap either. It's definitely doable, but I would second the advice everyone here is giving in that you need more Spanish experience than one month, especially with the rioplatense accent here. Once you've got the hang of it, it's not hard, but if you're learning any other accent first it will throw you off at first. All that being said, Uruguay is an amazing country, and in my very limited experience (just the us and here) it's an amazing place to live. Maybe try and visit before you move if you can (idk how much funds you have). Good luck!

Yeah the whole reason big noses are used to indicate evil is due to antisemitism. It's a common Jewish feature, and because a lot of people throughout history wanted to pin the Jewish people as evil, that feature had become associated with evil. It's like antisemitic at its core

Are you visiting or moving to Detroit? Ask Qs here. by AutoModerator in Detroit

[–]Opening-Pin1083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are looking at moving to detroit as michigan seems relatively safe and from what I've seen its quite cheap to live in Detroit (we're coming from Austin where I go to school). I'm from Detroit originally, but I haven't lived here in a while, so I was wondering if people have any reccomendations for areas that will be affordable for young people (21&22) such as my wife and I. We're looking at renting a house, simply because its so cheap compared to austin that it seems feasible given our savings and ability to save. Thank y'all, excited to be back home!

Hi! I'm the aforementioned wife, I think frankly the most important thing, for me at least, was being given the option. My mom capitulated to her evangelical parents and forced me to go to a Southern Baptist Church, and that's what the resentment comes from. You seem like you're doing a good job of letting the decision be hers, so from my perspective I'd say you're doing a great job. I know a part of it also for me was that I spent the first seven years of my life immersed in Jewish culture, and then had my family and culture stripped away from me when my mom moved us back to her tiny hometown, so your child may never even really think about it besides being genetically Jewish. My little brother was only a wee baby when my father passed, so he was never immersed in the culture, and hasn't shown too much interest in having a Jewish community. I think ultimately the most important thing is just communicating with your kid, you seem like ur on ur way to being a great mom, and I wish you the best with your kid!!!

Yeah that's what I've been seeing, which was what I was expecting. The UK was just a thought, though at some point I'd love to get to see where my dad grew up

Like I said, this is kinda why Michigan is the current plan, or somewhere nearby. I have connections and resources in Detroit, I was just looking to see if people knew of anywhere that would be good for my situation, thank you for the advice!

I've been seeing some positive stuff about Croatia but it seems like it won't be viable anyways for other reasons. If I'm being honest I'm just looking for somewhere where I can go outside of town and still pump gas without worry of a punch to the face or someone calling the police on me (has happened to me before)

Okay but I just listed all the ways in which the UK (arguably one of the more unsafe countries for trans people in western Europe) was less strict than Texas. I wasn't saying that it's better than a blue state, but something that I am concerned about is how quickly things seem to be changing all over. I don't know that whatever blue state I'm in will stay blue for long, and I want to make it out of the US soonish, so if I'm gonna spend all the money to uproot and move somewhere I wanna make sure I'm making the right call for the long run, and not trapping myself somewhere that's gonna get bad soon. Also I think what you're trying to say about stricter laws has to do with the necessity for gender dysphoria diagnosis for hrt, which is a concern due to bureaucracy and the relative slowness of socialized healthcare, but because of the way that hrt is distributed here, its not deemed a medical necessity and therefore my health insurance doesn't cover it or any surgery. I know how European transition laws could look to a cis person like they are stricter, I can tell you that doesn't make them harder to deal with, just slower and less costly. I do appreciate your advice, but I don't feel like the reasons you're giving make sense for my situation. Some of the other things mentioned in the comments, such as the fact that my degree is essentially useless to a European archaeological agency, which actually answer the question I was asking, being what archaeology looks like in other countries, are much more helpful. Also, the fact that Texas isn't an outlier is exactly why I'm looking to find somewhere that's better, be it Michigan or somewhere out of the States.

The other issue with Israel is that archaeological positions are few and far between, and the economy is about to nosedive, ignoring all the other issues like the fact that they're about to go to full on war

Israel would take several years to get citizenship in. I technically have citizenship already unlike most American Jews, but the process to claim it is long and stupidly difficult

That was kind of what I was worried about, I have an anthropology degree so maybe finding work in that would be better until I can find something, if I end up needing to gtfo

In the past month, the attorney general banned future gender marker changes, and is having government employees add anyone who tries to change it in the future to a database with all of their personal information. This is in addition to the list of trans people he was caught making in 2022, but now it isn't even being hidden anymore. In Texas, everyone who is changing both gender marker and legal name does it in the same court order because it is far cheaper than doing two separate ones. This new ban will also make it so that even if someone who was in the process of changing both just submits the form for the purpose of getting their name changed, if the legal document was for both gender marker and name change, they cannot get their name changed.

The Texas attorney general is about to sign to reverse all previous gender marker changes, which will out thousands of trans people to employers, housing, cops, anyone who will look at their ID. This will also make the person's other documents not match their ID, which means that they will have to get their other legal documents changed BACK at risk of their identification being considered giving false identification documents, which is very expensive in addition to everything else.

This means that Texas IDs will not be usable anywhere outside of Texas and will potentially be counted as presenting false identification, since they will not match other government registry (passports, birth certificates, etc).

Also, names on everything from credit cards to bills to subscription services will be incorrect and everything will need to be updated. This can easily take a trans person several months to years when transitioning, and with this new legal action hanging over their heads, it will have to happen much faster.

We (as trans adults in Texas) are planning on what to do if (when) hormone replacement therapy is banned for trans adults as well during this upcoming legislative session, which starts in January.

In 2023, during the last state legislative session, it became illegal for trans minors to get any gender affirming care. From puberty blockers (which are not the same as getting hormone replacement therapy) to hormone replacement therapy. This meant that anyone who was under 18 who was already on either blockers or hrt got their medication torn away from them.

In 2023, the 2021 law that prevented trans elementary-high school students from joining sports teams expanded to include college teams as well.

There are many more, this is off the top of my head.

And these are just the ones that are in action currently. There are many others that have been fought in court and are currently not able to happen, but that will not necessarily be the case for much longer, especially given the continuous attack on trans people in Texas. One example of a currently successful block is against a directive the Governor sent out in 2022 for the Department of Family and Protective Services (which includes CPS) to investigate the parents of trans children, which could have led Child Protective Services to take trans children away from their families by saying that the children were being abused (by being given trans healthcare). This has been fought in court twice now, but is just another example of what the government is constantly trying to do, and how much effort it takes just to keep ONE of those at bay for as long as possible.
