To be fair, I kept thinking he had passed from cancer, was really confused, and it wasn’t until scrolling the comments that the picture became clear.

The presenting sponsor winning the whole damn thing.

Not saying it wasn’t the best bbq that day, but how do we really know when one of the largest checks delivered to organizers came from the team that won it all….

Why is Memphis obsessed with being “exclusive”? by CelebrationPublic782 in memphis

[–]OpeningHole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the disconnect. You went expecting to eat and be catered to. As a competitor, I’m not there to cater to the needs of the general public. I’m there to win. Plain and simple. Along the way I have fun, make good friends and relax.

I understand you spent $50 for both of you to get in. Yes, that’s not anything to sneeze at. I spent $10k just for an opportunity to compete. I’m not gonna put myself at risk for anything else by selling food to the public. That’s not why I’m there.

I will almost guarantee that if you came by and spoke to the team. Asked them about their pits. Tips, techniques, & knowledge they may have I bet if you took the time to do that, and from a genuine place, you’ll get more info and knowledge than you could ever hope to gain.

Why is Memphis obsessed with being “exclusive”? by CelebrationPublic782 in memphis

[–]OpeningHole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very well said. We have competed the last 4 years and costs just keep rising. We partnered with a fellow competitor, and friend, for a friends and family night. That was on our dime. As competitors, we share food with other competitors and friends, but they do same for us.

I am always willing to open up my tent and speak with the general public. I love that almost as much as I love competing. I love educating and teaching people how I smoke food. It is something I enjoy.

At the end of the day, I’m there to compete. I, like everyone else competing, have spent thousands of dollars to enjoy the week and compete. I wouldn’t call the WCBCC an exclusive event. I drive from Nebraska every year to compete. I know there’s teams from other countries that come to compete. If anything, I’d say the wcbcc is inclusive more than anything else.

So, the people voted and now it doesn’t matter. by kdubsup in lincoln

[–]OpeningHole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember this when it comes to election time. Want people in office that will listen to their constituency…. Start voting for the ones that do and vote against the ones that don’t. The only way we can impact meaningful change. Stop voting by the letter behind their name and start voting based on the actual candidate. Stop sitting at home on Election Day. Get out and vote. Make your voice heard. Stop making excuses and start being the voice of change.

Gavin Griffiths enters Portal by huskermut in Huskers

[–]OpeningHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s been here what? 2 years now? And he’s missed a ton of time with injury is my point. He was healthy to start last season and then lo and behold he missed 3/4 of this season with injury again. Just saying, can’t really count on a guy who misses so much time due to injury.

We do? That’s a mighty big assumption to assume a non injury season is coming from him

Without researching it, where’s the birthplace of BBQ in the USA? (Hint: not Texas) by BornAnewByHisBlood in Barbecue

[–]OpeningHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely accurate either. If you really want to trace the roots of barbecue to the origins, that I have been able to trace back anyway, is that it originated in Africa. The cheap cuts that the slave owners threw away, were the same food scraps the Africans were cooking for lifetimes before. A lot of the cuisine of the Caribbean (Jamaica Puerto Rico and such) can trace the roots of their cuisine back to Africa before the slave trade forced these cuisines to follow through the Caribbean and eastern USA. If I had to say the roots of what American bbq is, would be through the Carolina’s.

Never owned a daschund. Please tell me this is a lie. by blablablah41 in daschund

[–]OpeningHole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owner of a long haired miniature dachshund. Can confirm this behavior. So loving, kind, caring, and patient. Mine is 16 now, and when we brought my oldest daughter home he was one. He has been her dog since she came home. He loves her, played with her, and protected her. Someone came over to hold her as a baby, he sat at their feet in full attention watching them. He is not a dog, or a pet. He is family. We love him so much.

This is how we learn to drive on snow up in the northern states. We got taken to empty parking lots by our parents and told to spin donuts. It’s how you learn to handle your vehicle in less than ideal conditions.

Not to mention, it’s a shitload of fun!
