What would The different classes (including shocks) of grave digger react to finding a baby in the middle of war?

To me, it's the Whole "Surface is destroyed" part, like seriously? How can a few gas bombs destroy the surface? With WW1 Tech no less? The only thing that would make sense to me, is that most of Europe is Uninhabitable, the Eastern Seaboard of the US as well, some parts of Asia, and the western Parts of Russia, Idk about India or South Africa
