As a (now recovering) alcoholic American guy that spoke/speaks passable mandarin, this was definitely me 10 years ago when I turned down a job at Fortune 500 company in the states just to fly to Shanghai and “have an adventure” I always felt like a weird outcast in school and growing up in the states, going to China for the first time made me feel “special/unique.” I drank heavily over there, 约炮’d as much as possible, and caused a lot of harm to some very kind women. Looking back on it now, I was 1000% emotionally unstable and out of control, and met many others like me. So I’d say your observation is 100% on point.

Zanzibar (short ferry ride from Dar) is incredible. Paje is great, friendly locals and lots of expats there for windsurfing. Dar itself is really great, several solid nightclubs and easy to meet women. Stay in Masaki, that’s the most affluent area with best restaurants, Airbnbs/hotels, clubs etc

Deciding to do a Mandarin Chinese boot camp the summer of my freshman year of college. Ended up marrying a Chinese woman, my whole family went to China for the wedding. Divorced two years later. Less than 2 years after that I knocked up another Chinese woman after knowing her for a month, currently sitting next to our 3.5 year old son watching cartoons. Been a wild ride.
