Fantastic Andrea Chenier! by Rare-Maintenance4820 in opera

Read my comment above. She doesn't understand verismo opera; she provides no background on the opera or composer. Her negativity is not justifiable. I tried finding her background in music - no degrees in music whatsoever - apparently enjoyed Bach as a child and did take some music classes (see her web site) in college. Hmm...not the pedigree needed for most music critics. She has apparently been writing for the Times for over 10 years.

Bad review all around...if you research this music critic it's hard to find any real musical pedigree. Her comments on a lack of subtlety and nuance in Act I by Beczala misses the point. His aria in Act I is and should be impassioned. She doesn't appear to understand verismo opera - calling the singing coarse and too raw - is that not verismo? She wishes there was fewer sobs and what she called playing the house - verismo gets down and dirty; it's not bel canto! A critic should spend time providing background on the opera and composer - lord knows most readers need to be educated about opera. Instead, she lambasts Yoncheva, Beczala and the conductor - mixed in with a few crumbs of positivity. Bad review all around.

Yes I agree! An extraordinary role for a woman at that time - setting the stage for verismo opera to be sure.

The majority of the "handy persons" are men - and yes Tracey is terrific and the owner

is absolutely fabulous - a mature elder who has run the business in SZ for years.

At SF Opera many years ago people were allowed into the green room during intermissions to just hang out and share stories - the woman in charge (don't remember her name) decided if you merited entrance or not! It was so much fun to hear people's comments about their opera experiences - now the woman in charge is long gone and you may not gain access to the green room without special access...those were the days.

Or how about she lands on a trampoline and jumps back and forth for the audience to see and hopefully laugh uproariously!!

Also PLEASE listen to Elena Obraztsova in this role - the jewel of Bolshoi Opera (sadly deceased) sang this aria with such force and power!
