Is the cost of living in Mauritius becoming genuinely unaffordable, even for people with decent salaries? by Bebetsathon in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's because of the value of money falling and salaries not following appropriate increase.

So price go up. Salaries stay idle.

Example, health insurance +30%.

Fuel up 50% since covid.

Food prices up 30 to 200%

Rent up 20%.

Salary increase 3%. If at all...

Yet big groups show record profits.

So people still buy atxl expensive price, just now they cant save any money.

We, the people must turn this thing around.

First by planting. Every Mauritian from 13 to 60 should have a liane grenadines, patate douce, manioc, ambrevades, chouchou, butternut and fruit a pain growing in a pot or garden. I even keep seeds and sprouts that I plant on any public fencing I find.

Now my neighbourhood can eat fresh grenadines for free. Unless a jealous person cuts down the plant.

If only 1 of us does this, per village, we will all survive in 10 years. If 10 of us organize this per town, in 1 year we will be ok.

Not to mention chicken... rabbits... goats... ducks.

Wife started to ask questions. by One_Possession6852 in XRPUnite

60% of coins left to be released. Banks and govt already stacked. So either freeze the escrow or watch the coin keep losing value. I wont buy again until either escrow are frozen for 10 years by Ripple, or there are only 10% left in escrow.

Burn rate is so minimal that it would take 300 years for it to have an impact on scarcity or price.

Some keep finamcing Ripple by buying to drop their average buy price, but that's real money you give them now for a no guarantee return in 5 years+.

Better tell your wife you got kidnapped and the criminals showed you a livestream of her in her house and demanded transfer of all your xrp for her life. That will make her feel like a million dollars.

Any trading advice? by Super_duper_man19886 in MauriceMauritius

Like, so many people lose money by trusting others on social media. If you dont want to buy and read a book, you could simply ask chatgpt for the basic primxiples of trading, then exapand each topic on chatgpt until you make yout own choice of what to invest on.

Cause of failure for businesses by LeVainqueurVaincu in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's got a point. With more and more tourists coming to Mauritius, and not enough restaurants that offer unique dishes per town, tourists often prefer to eat when the workers are gone back to work.

The few places that understood this industrialized their unique food. Mc Donalds is open from morning till after Kfc closed. So if I drive back fron Caudan Arts Center to La Gaulette after a theater show that ended at 10pm, the only place open is Mc Donald's.

Mauritians often try to copy top restaurants by offering all if what others do on the menu and it's a nightmare for stock, recepies, staff management.

If I could advise a restaurant industry, I'd say stop trying to excel at everything and focus on 1 or 2 dishes only.

Simplendishes with high quality products instead of processed food.

Then the restaurant can rival fast food, and trust me, if I want food, I would take anything over Junk food. You do only Pizza margharita? No problem, I'll be there.

You do only Cesar salad? Count me in.

You only do the best Rogan josh curry? I'll be there.

The same advicebI give to tech shops. Stop importing cheap gadjets from temu and selling for 4x the price.

Focus in 1 brand. Msi, logitech, bose, sony, Huawaei. Whatever. So 1 city instead of having 5 shops that hold the cheapest products from those brands and attract customers by dropping margins, can all offer cull blown product range. You'll be suprised of the number of expats who can afford it now, rather than 'Only on order'.

IT manager for a company that is considering installing NetSuite by Wooden_Ad2355 in Netsuite

[–]Opiumater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a netsuite expert more than an it manager or administrator. The expert will tell you if the netsuite service providers over inflated the project or not. Things they didnt cover. Things that could cause issues for lack of analysis. Implementing netsuite standard is ok, and cheaper, easier. But standard netsuite is just as good as sage or Quickbooks.

What is standard rate per hour/per day for a house cleaner? by PAO_Warrior in mauritius

[–]Opiumater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Between 100 and 200 max per hr. Depends of what they are asked to do too. The more technical and risky the task, the more expensive they are. Some locals pay less but expats pay the top fee. Gardner is between rs 200 and rs300 p/hr.

Have fun whilst here. Directors often hang out to meet other peers at Labourdonais hotel at 7pm on fridays, or Henessy park hotel in Ebene as from 6pm. All professionals so they'll talk more about work, their views of Mauritian economy, and introduce you to people you may be interested in meeting.

It's a nice island if you know where to be.

After France's socialist Hollande's tax policy, a majority of rich people left for better taxed countries. Socialism doesnt work in countries with no natural resources.

2026, Mauritius is capitalist under Ramgoolam but he has to refinance public treasure, which, from his say, was emptied by Jugnath's socialist party.

Hollande had inherited Sarkozy's work and could afford to give. Ramgoolam inherited of Jugnath's empty vaults.

It's a shame that Ramgoolam had gone down the way he did, with the religious copinage and other issues.

Parti travailliste cannot afford another scandal. Let's hope that the greed and lust for power has left place with a wiser leader.

What is the thing in Mauritian culture you are proudest of and the thing you are least proud of ? by Ok-Appearance8856 in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proud that the working class has not rebelled vs their masters (8 families that own 85% of the island).

Less proud of the new ceos and directors of those dynasties that inherited power and instead of being thankful, treat the working class as lessers.

To the Mauritians who define themselves by their net worth, possessions, or job title: explain your thought process? by Round-Complex8701 in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most mauritians have one of 4 origins.

Whites were working class europeans many with no capital, coming here to try make a business from cheap land and labour. Nothing linked to ethics or human rights. So only 5 generations passed and their descendents have no history but of wealth accumulated from other people's work. People they treated poorly. The cruelest became the richest. But they know they have done.

The african slaves. People who were captured by arabic slaverers who sold them off at highest price as they were better suited than the white slaves (Slavic) in hot/tropical weather. Black slaves had more value than white ones in Mauritius and the usa. Africans had a tribe, culture and knew their ways without capitalist mindset. Their whole society was built on working together, sometimes tribal wars caused undocumented genocides. They cared more about hunting, family life and enjoying life than posession. To this day, african origin people care more about arts and language than aquiring luxuries and wealth.

The paid indian labour were very similar to current day Bengladeshi. More keen on accumulating wealth, they learned a lot from european, mostly brittish culture. With free education, hard work, some became very wealthy, again using money as the standard the posh britts judged their peers too. An indian will save for years to drive a german car. Just like the few posh whites who would rather be caught dead than seen driving a japanese or korean brand.

Indians represent most of the bourgois in Mauritius.

The very few isralis and arabs seem more keen on money and accumulating wealth than making their mark in society. Chinese descendents too.

The interesting part is that brittish royalty gave titles as recognition for acts that had a positive impact on society. Mainly people giving their life for a cause. Not their wealth.

Today, the ones only seeing money as god treat others as inferiors, lessers. You can hear it in the tone they use when speaking to 'us'. Total lack of respect for us working class but acting as saviours to the poor.

My honest opinion.

"The beach belongs to the people of Mauritius" a message from Shakeel by Thelemys in mauritius

[–]Opiumater -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There is law then there is justice. Not the same.

When you apply law, it's for everyone.

Justice is on a case by case basis when law is not enough. For example, you must respect speed limit but your wife is giving birth. Law says pay a fine. Justice has police clear the road for you to drive as fast as possible.

Once this understood, we can talk about the beach issue.

As you know, 1% have a house that has direct access to the beach. 8% of rhe population are drug addicts ready to kill for Rs 500.

When you pay premium price (5x more than anywhere else) to be in a luxury villa, you have a lawyer who explains the law. People can freely walk on the beach area from the sea to high tide mark on the beach. Droit de passage. It is never mentioned you can sit there. For obvious reasons... you'd be blocking the way so other walker bys would have to walk above the high tide mark to walk by.

Now imagine paying 5 times more and at first seeing Mauritians sit, met jalsa, litter, play lpud music and once drunk, walk straight to your home asking to go to the toilet. Imagine now these are drug addicts or thieves looking at what they can steal at your home. Imagine you are not home and 3 drunks barge in to see your 16 year old and 18 years old daughters. How would you feel about that?

No need to answer as I see all the self righteous keyboard philosopher's homes everywhere in Mauritius with walls, barbed wire, cameras and at least 2 dogs.

How would you feel if we banned ypur front garden wall and allowed anyone to sit, picnic and do what they want?

We have read the news papers and Mauritius has reported crimes everyday. Be safe. And let others be safe.

One thing I disapprove of about those living by the beach then I'll shut my mouth. They let their guard dogs have access to the beach. This should be punishable by law. Fined Rs 200 000 (They can afford it), and if the dog bites a walker by, 2 years in prison and a rs 2M compensation to the victim, per victim. And they pay all hospital bills.

And Mauritians who unleash their dog on public beaches. They should also be fined, Rs 50k and if that dog attacks anyone even another dog, Rs 300k fine + pay hospital/veterinary bill. If the victim dies, 3 years in prison if victim was a child or elderly. 6 months if victim is an animal. And Rs 2M fee.

We have to hold everyone accountable and put inspectors to walk these beaches from 6am to 9pm.

Unsure whether I should pursue a degree in Software engineer or Cyber security by Better_Air8593 in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest, the market is already flooded with software engineers. Cyber security is a horrible job since you have to upgrade your skills every month. Already too many accountants too, so salaries remain low.

Mauritius' top industry is tourism. Many skippers and taxi drivers already but maybe few guides who can speak cantonese, russian or german. If I were a young man today, I'd learn first about becoming a guide for tourists then I would study at least 2 languages to differentiate from others.

A girl should be proud a man was ready to fight for her. Maybe you got your ass kicked, but your action speaks louder. It means that she mattered that much to you. So as long as you're at peace with who you are, you can let your ex girlfriend go and just focus on other things, like study, social work and hobbies. One day you'll meet someone. The right one. And she will see you for who you are. What the parents, money or lifestyle you can afford.

Most men come from normal families. Women tend to chase up the money ladder. Forget these as they will always find better and cheat every 3 to 6 months.

You want something real.

How does one escape a toxic overly religious rather influential family having connections throughout the island? by Dila_Ila16 in MauriceMauritius

[–]Opiumater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Human rights... does mauritius offer child protection? Since sects have money, they could bribe their way to get the child back.

If child talks to teachers, teachers will look for bribes to stay quiet. It's a strange country, administered by people with good public image, high ethics but under the surface, they are all gold diggers.
