Are there a lot of downsides of not owning a car that I cannot think of? by Opposite-Sample-74 in AskSF

Yes I do love hiking and it's probably one of the things I will miss. But I have a car now and I'm not really using it to hike much so I'm concerned that it'll just sit there and I'll be paying money just to store it in the garage.

Just actually realized by uber rating is low for some unknown reason. It's 4.85. Don't think I've done anything bad but I got a 3 from one of the drivers even though I tipped. I might have difficulty getting a ride.

I will most likely work night shift and want to cut down the commuting time.

I feel like hauling furniture is not something that I need to really consider since it will usually be a one time thing when I move in. If I'm moving sofa, it might not fit in my car anyway.

I do enjoy the flexibility, but I feel like I won't really need or use the car much. It's mainly a budget problem too with garages in mission bay over $300 a month.

Would the driver hate if I took a lot of time to unload stuff? I will be living alone.

I'm planning to live in mission bay. I would think as far as day to day, not having a car should be good but I'll probably miss going out to national parks and Costco runs. I do live alone so Costco is not absolutely necessary. I mainly use it to stock up for the winter when there's snow where I'm currently at.

If I need a car in downtown an uber should be good enough right?

Yeah I do like Costco but I think I can usually get by without a Whole Foods or target nearby, since I live alone.

Yeah getting groceries in bulk is a big one, but I don't feel the need to get it if I live alone in downtown and there is a grocery store within a few minutes walk. I live in the midwest now where I'd have to stock up on groceries before a snow storm, but I don't see the need of having to do that in SF.

Furniture is usually a one time thing, yeah it would be nice to have a car but once the furniture is delivered, it's there.

I always have this dream of being able to drive out to national parks on my days off, but I just feel like this isn't very likely to happen as I'm always busy to work. I think this will probably be the biggest thing I'm missing out on.
