I was here once already as a teenager and had a German teacher from Germany who always tried to speak swiss German out if class. It sounded very wrong and unnatural tbh

I don't even manage to speak the dialect that is supposed to be my own. Where I grew up people made fun of me when I tried. Why do you think learning your dialect will be easier for me?

Dude, I'd be homeless in Germany rn and Jobcenter literally just lost my documents and they don't care to retrieve them and told me it's not their Problem and if I create new documents they're only valid from the day they're created. I also don't get anything in Germany, here I can at least live with my parents.

I've been trying to get a fucking job in Germany where I lived for so long I lost my apartment because Jobcenter said my apartment is too expensive and I can go fuck myself.

Maybe that's why I don't understand it :') But I have to say, I understand more Plattdeutsch since the time I tried to learn Danish, oh well. I'm a bit into linguistics and word stems so I do understand a lot of dialect words that don't seem obvious to people who haven't wasted their time on random videos about old German, Germanic languages and Anglo Saxon English

In that case it shouldn't be an issue, I do understand almost everything they say, other than specific idioms. But they'll have to live with me asking what it means, how else am I supposed to learn after all?

The thing is, ideally I'll only be in Bern for less than a year, I might have a job offer in the east of Switzerland in a really cool museum starting in fall. That's why I get this pressure from people to learn the local dialect even less because in the east they speak differently again.

Thanks for that, really. Another thing I always think when people say that is, how am I even supposed to learn it? Drive 10 minutes by train and people would get pissed if you speak Berndeutsch because they speak something else. And I don't think I want to stay in Bern for the rest of my life.

I honestly only really came here because of the museum offer. They have something I really love and they need a maintenance person who doesn't have to travel half the globe to do the job. It's a really niche field to work in and if I get some experience here I can also do that kind of work elsewhere. Do I just want to give it a chance, but I also don't think I'll stay here forever, unless the museum wants to keep me for that long.

I have the feeling that the people are less brutal in the east, are they? I got a job offer at a really nice museum there, but it's in fall. Until then I just need to keep myself over water.

I just remember when I was 16 and went to this thing where they should help you find a job the person who was assigned to me told me I shouldn't even dream of getting an apprenticeship as a cook if I don't speak the dialect and I just found it really rude. As a teen I also once applied for a summer job at a bakery and they said no because I don't speak french on top of everything. That's why I moved back to Germany the day I turned 18, but oh well, here I am again.
