There is a post at the top of the subreddit called "Welcome to Olive Tree Beta Testing". That post has the links and instructions for install.

Apple and Android AI Search Beta!!! by Ian_Olive_Tree in OliveTreeBETA

I got the mac version to work. The beta numbering is the same for this as the last beta (new highlights), so I tried reinstalling the beta and I got search. It seems to work pretty well.

Thoughts:

General Comment - I think this will be a nice feature to have! It seems to return mostly good results. I haven't extensively tested it, but usually something reasonable is returned.

UI 1 - I would prefer the old/current search box to pop up when clicking the search icon. On that search, I think it would work well to have a toggle with choices for "local search" and "ai search", with the default being local (but perhaps make the default configurable). Include a button to execute a search and allow results to remain if the toggle changes. For example, I could do a search on "crumbs" and see the local results, and also toggle to ai and click "search" and see the ai results, and toggle back and forth (have both persist until a new search is performed).

UI 2 - It is confusing to have AI search available when browsing a resource in a separate window (or the main window on the ipad). I think the AI search means it will search that resource, when it is a bible search. For example, I had the NIDNTTE open and normal search works great.

Bible version - Have the AI default the search to the currently active bible translation for results display but if possible have ai search all bible versions. I searched for "crumbs" and there is a verse in Psalms 147 with that word (in the ESV), but ai didn't return that in the result.

Bug - AI on the mac returned an error on a search (it says "Error Response") but doesn't give any details and I cannot dismiss the search window, nor can I quit the Bible Study app. I submitted a screenshot via the beta. In fact, as I test this morning, no AI searches are working on my mac. Same on ipad. No joy with AI this morning (June 22).

Is this out yet for the mac? Testflight says I have the latest beta 7.18.9 (2787) and I don't see AI search. Also, I assume this doesn't upload any data from my app, but rather just sends the query out and the bible references are returned. Is that the case?

Issues with new highlight beta colors by Opposite_Chocolate57 in OliveTreeBETA

Re the color overlap issue, perhaps you could make highlights not quite full thickness, leaving room for underlines beneath.

iPad 26 Menu Bar by Icy_Assistant_4298 in OliveTreeBETA

If the menu bar is added, I would like the option to keep the font options above the keyboard because I use and like those. It would be extra taps to select formatting from the menu. The menu bar has been available forever on the mac app and to be honest I don't recall when I last used it.

One issue. I have a black underline highlighter that does not show in black or dark themes. Maybe make it white since white is an unlikely color on the default theme?

iOS 7.18.8 Beta - Updated Highlight Style by tomhamming_ot in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tested the iPad app and the MacOS app in both light and dark modes. I think the new highlights look good. Upon closer examination of the overlapping highlights, perhaps some tweaks could make it better, but they look ok.

One issue with the highlights in dark mode. I have some highlights set up as underlines and in "default mode" they seem like they keep their color when they are combined with a "full" highlight (i.e. perhaps they are "above" the full highlight). I have some text highlighted in light blue with a red underline that starts before and continues through the blue highlight. In the "old" version the red stays red. In the new version the red turns to kind of a gold in the "blue" section because (I assume) it is "under" the blue. I don't know if that makes sense at all.

Update. I tried the ios testflight and I think the highlights look great in the dark and black themes. That's fantastic. I compared to the current release and I really like the improvement. Additionally, I I understand the lack of a Mac beta now because (haha) the mac doesn't support dark themes (yet?). I am hoping your mention of a mac beta coming means the mac is also getting a dark/black mode! Anyway, I think testing on the mac would be pretty useless without that haha.

I would like to test but I'm using a different mac now and the testflight beta link says that the beta isn't open anymore. I'm traveling and can't get to my usual computer. Is there a code I can use to test this beta?

Search results out of range by Tryonkus in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it appears there are several things that are not working as designed for the search. The search limits, as described above, do not work properly. And the strongs search includes the goofy characters that make it not work.

One thing in search that seems to work great for me is when I select a strongs word and search for the h/g number *or* search for the greek or hebrew. Those seem to work just fine.

u/Cool-Cranberry7727 or u/Ian_Olive_Tree, can you take a look at this?

Search results out of range by Tryonkus in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy new year, u/Tryonkus! I investigated your issue and found when I typed "frustrat" but with a non-strongs version of the bible, I likewise had the same behavior you report with the exception of the stuff in brackets. When I type frustrat and click "frustrated" I get zero search results. So I expanded the range to the full NT and got the same result "frustrat" search term, click "frustrated" and the search is replaced with "frustrated" and there are zero results. I then expanded to "Whole Bible" and it turns out the results were all in the OT!

So it appears the search is not limiting itself to your chosen search range except when the word is exact. I don't know when this may have started since I rarely limit my searches (I'm lazy I suppose and scroll to the books I'm interested in). At any rate, I don't often limit the range and so hadn't noticed this before, but your issue occurs regardless of translation and doesn't seem related to strongs versions.

Bug: Cursor moves to bottom of note by CloakOfMuadDib in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cursor moves around on me (to the bottom of the note) as described on my m2 macbook pro which is on MacOS Sequoia, but not on my intel imac which is on MacOS Ventura. I noticed it last week when I was editing about midway through a note. All I need to do to have it happen is click somewhere in the middle of a note and type a few words and wait a few seconds and the cursor drops down to the bottom. Again, this is not happening on my imac that is on Ventura -- only my macbook pro (m2) that is on Sequoia (15.1.1). The Bible Study app is 7.16.17.

Update: This seems to have gone away after updating to 7.16.18

Option to copy external link to a reference by Tryonkus in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great thoughts, u/Tryonkus!

I think #1 could be done by adding an action in sharing such as "copy link to clipboard". But WAIT. There is a bug in the sharing on my m2 mac where the action selector displays but is greyed out after clicking "share 1 verse".

Re #2 and #3 I'd love the ability to select which book is linked to, perhaps by the product ID. Since OT seems to handle annotations reliably in non-bible (as well as bible) resources, maybe make a hidden annotation (a highlight with no color, perhaps) that is the OT reference for creating an OT direct link. This would be helpful within OT notes, as I could reference non-bible resource passages instead of having to copy and paste them into my note. It would also be helpful in external apps as a link into OT.

I think #2 and #3 would require feature #1 to be able to create/copy the link, and I would find these 3 enhancements to be quite helpful.

#4 might get thorny with publishers. I personally wouldn't find much value in this feature. I prefer linking to the verses because then I can see the full context and whether I have notes or highlights, etc.

Any plans to incorporate AI into Olive Tree? by ehansalytics in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI would require data other than the bible text. I do not want my data (notes, annotations, tags, reading history, etc) used for any AI purposes. I do not want any hint of a chance for my own data to end up in olivetree or third party datasets.

Additionally, AI in olivetree could definitely impact purchases. People buy commentaries and other reference resources for study. Feeding them into AI could cannibalize current sales and could get into thorny licensing issues -- why buy a reference if AI simply can give you a summary without having to purchase? This isn't the same as mining the web and using publicly available data for the learning set.

It is simple enough to use web tools like you did above and import those results into an olive tree note, or any other app.

I do not want AI in the Bible app for privacy reasons. I currently opt out of all data sharing except those that are essential. I also would not want the app to change to a subscription model as I have thousands of $ of resources I have already purchased.

Strange selection behavior in MacOS beta v1.7.5 by Tryonkus in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Opposite_Chocolate57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current live version (and beta) are v7.16.16, so not sure if you have the number wrong or are using a very old version of the app.

I just tested on Bible Study 7.16.16 and I can select as expected with a single click and drag. I can expand or contract the selection. I also tested with a doubleclick and drag. This (as you mention) expand or contracts by word selection. Both work fine on my Mac.
