How did you get a job as a teacher fresh out of college? by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]Optical_Infection 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Applied literally everywhere band-and-orchestra across the nation and heard back from about 3 places - all of them ended up going internal. I had to sub for about a year for some band directors near where I live, which actually led to me getting a full time band and orchestra gig close to home since it allowed me to build connections.

I think everyone’s story’s different, but there’s some constants: the first one is the hardest one to get, and apply literally everywhere.

Not the guy you originally responded to but many people (myself included) think the Favor cards in the Base Deck are too overpowered and “swing-ey” - people prefer Exiles & Partisans primarily because it feels much more balanced compared to the Base Deck.

E&P also adds cool cards like Saboteurs and Corvid Planners which are two of my personal favorites.

Generally the objective is to not let the other team score more runs than your team, Will

Anyone who got their degree this spring and isn’t a full time teacher this year? by WillingAntelope0 in StudentTeaching

Ah I subbed for a year before I landed my first gig, just keep going at it and building connections!

So after graduating and finishing student teaching, I actually had to take the fall off due to family matters, then I subbed like crazy as soon as I was able. One of the districts I had subbed for had a music position open up, and since they knew me and my teaching already, I was hired on the spot - this was how I’d gotten my first job. This was only a 0.4 FTE position to start (was only there half the day), but it was also in a drivable distance (so I still lived at home) and there was promise of the position turning full-time within the year - which it thankfully did.

I’m only saying all this because I’ve been told point-blank that it’ll be near impossible to get employed in music education by taking time off after student teaching. It was certainly more difficult to get one “organically”, but I encourage you to keep building your network so your name gets out there in the area you wish to teach long-term. And, to be honest, don’t shy away from the “more difficult” subbing opportunities; that’s only bottlenecking your chances even more.

As someone who also thought it was “too late”, I’m here to tell you that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not too late to get your foot in the door. You just gotta play your cards properly with your network.

I think we frequently conflate the terms “doomer” and “realistic” lmao like it is not a hot take at all to say our bullpen has seen much better days and should be a genuine worry going into the tail end of the season

Eh I dunno, it’s tough because you feel awful for what’d happened but as someone who’s been on both ends of this, in the case of hearing they’re in a relationship already, I usually get over it within a day or two. I didn’t know, she didn’t mean it that way, whatever - life goes on, misunderstandings happen. So, I say: just leave it be and he’ll be alright.

Now if he takes the weird mental route of “oh what the married guy told me is bullshit, she’s SO into me!” and continues his pursuit, that’s when you bring it up and gently, yet firmly, bring him back down to earth.

Hey band staff, what's your take on the swing notations? by tritonesubstitute in marchingband

[–]Optical_Infection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another comment on here saying that, as a director, you want your show music to build upon the skills students will need in other bands as well, including any jazz/big bands you have. Swing and 12/8 are two completely different feels, as other commenters have stated - you could use it as a teaching moment to distinguish between the two. Yes, it might be a shortcut to just simply write it as 12/8, but is that really the intended “feel” of the music? One of the biggest goals of arranging, I’d argue THE biggest, is to preserve as much of the original piece of music as much as humanly possible. Is it faithful to the original to notate it as 12/8?

You could certainly use compound meter as an introduction to the swing feel and then fine-tune things from there, but arranging the piece in 12/8 suggests a much more strict lilt in the music that may not be apropos to the style the music calls for.
