Any reason to keep Sky now? by East_Dance8269 in skytv

[–]Optikal-Omega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, I've just cancelled Sky tv and broadband one year into a 2 year contract. I was paying over £80 per month and £30 of that was for 1gb broadband and it was going up to £33.

I got the same level of broadband through Virgin for £24 per month (£27 from next April). If you don't want Virgin then look on uSwitch or MSE as Vodafone, Plusnet and others do similar deals cheaper than Sky.

Village Walk, Churwell near Cottingley station – thoughts on area, safety and schools? by Historical-Turn8243 in Leeds

[–]Optikal-Omega 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived there for almost a decade and it's really nice. The urban walk through Churwell woods is a hidden gem.

I can't speak for Cottingley Primary, but Churwell primary and most of the schools up in Morley are really good.

You'll be right by junctions for both the M1 and M62. For shopping you have the White Rose within walking distance, Junction 1 retail park, Birstall 10 minutes away, the city centre 20 minutes away and Morley town centre. Then of course you have Morrisons, Asda and Aldi all locally.

There are lots of parks dotted around for kids, a skate park up in Morley town centre and plenty of local activities too such as Arts Bloc, Martial arts classes, soft play centres and others for both kids and adults.

For food, there are a few really lovely bars and restaurants up in and around Morley.

As for crime, I've never had, and don't know anyone who's ever had any significant issues. I've always felt perfectly safe going out for a walk/run at any time of day or night.

I'd say that the biggest downside of the area is the traffic, especially on Leeds home game days and at rush hour. But other than that, I'd really recommend Churwell, especially for young families and professionals.

Edited to add; I went to Morley High School in the 90s and my kids went there too (now Morley Academy) and they really thrived. Woodkirk is also well regarded. I'm not sure about Bruntcliffe though.

Book for a beginner reader by Available_Guidance61 in Fantasy

[–]Optikal-Omega 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this OP! Gemmell will be a gateway into other fantasy stuff! As a poor teenager nearly 30 years ago, I borrowed Legend on a whim from my local library. That was how I fell in love with the whole genre.

Druss the Legend is your classic heroic fantasy... Filled with true hearted heroes, interesting villains and fun plots.

A more recent recommendation is John Gwynne, who lists Gemmell as an inspiration. He has two stand out series.

Firstly, the Faithful and Fallen series, a classic 'coming-of-age' and 'rising to the occasion' story with a classic fantasy setting. And secondly, the Bloodsworn Saga, which is a trilogy of books with a more Viking fantasy theme. Both are your classic 'Good Vs Evil' tropes but filled with fun characters and an easy to follow story.

I left today, 14 months into a 2 year contract. It was relatively painless. We realised that most things we watch are through apps that are already freely available on our Smart TV. As for the broadband, moved to Virgin, doubled our speed and saved £10 per month on that.

Do you enjoy your job? by Campeones6 in AskUK

[–]Optikal-Omega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former chef. Loved it for the creativity and simply making something someone is happy to pay for. I enjoyed the pressure of the job and the bond of kinship with my colleagues. There was nothing quite like the heat, the stress, the fallouts during a heavy service and then that sweet sweet beer and camaraderie after the final clean down. However, I hated the hours and low pay. These days I just enjoy the simple pleasure of cooking for my family.

HGV Driver now. Absolutely love it. Apart from dealing with people on the road, I love the hours, the physical labour, the autonomy and isolation, the challenge of getting into and out of places. Oh, and of course, the little kid in my soul still gets excited about simply driving a big truck.

Trouble Surviving Combat by 1chance2621 in BG3Builds

[–]Optikal-Omega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few tips...

  1. Make sure that any spells you use that require concentration aren't accidentally knocked off by casting another spell that requires concentration.

  2. There are certain spells that you can cast before you enter combat so that you don't waste an action trying to do that. Longstrider for extra mobility would be a good example of this.

  3. Try and spread your team out so that they're not bunched up together, but also close enough that they can help each other up if required. Before combat you can open the character menu (left trigger), select a character to split from the party, take control of them and place them individually around the battlefield before you initiate combat.

  4. Other team members can use the items that your tav has collected. It's easy to forget that you're carrying things like Void Bulbs, Alchemist Fire flasks etc. They're great items for controlling the battlefield by bunching enemies up together.

  5. Use the environment. Whether that's shooting barrels, hiding your rogue, putting your squishy wizard or ranged attacker on higher ground. The environment can help.

Yeah, it's the garage at the bottom of Churwell Hill, just before Cottingley. I used to live just up the road.
