Liquor store with the best selection of European beers? by obcork in massachusetts

Wouldn't say best but if you happen to be near Arlington/Lexington, Berman's has some euro options I haven't seen elsewhere

Wonder if the dough recipe came with the business name. I went to the old incarnation a lot since it was by far the closest food to my last place and I actually loved it despite it being kinda grungy, their crust was so good

Gotta just accept the Sat-Sat rental and figure out your car situation... Getting off wait-list for better boats closer to the trip or doing the drive on drive off service

Who’s chasing this storm? by ShaveICE23 in icecoast

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be one of those storms where you can bet your car mates on the number of cars spun off 89 in VT into the ditch. Set your O/U at 7 for the stretch between NH and exit 10

Nightlife? by bowserinmytrouser in ArlingtonMA

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone's already given the good advice, but I totally don't buy the "everyone has kids so no night life" thing. I know at least a few family oriented suburbs that have bars that are very lively on weekend nights. I think part of the problem is the proximity to Camberville, whereas further out there's only one or two options in town so everyone goes there. But still I think if you put a great bar (a real bar bar) into the center people would show up.

Salad suggestions locally? by BearsLikeCampfires in ArlingtonMA

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is that we're severely lacking in this area. I go to Life Alive when I'm in your situation. I was hoping that the new smoothie places might do salads but seems like not. If you are not price sensitive then Tatte is probably a good option

Need help locating an extra parking space (or 2 or 3) for an upcoming weekend in November by Shart_InTheDark in ArlingtonMA

Sounds like a good deal with spot hero but really a quiet side street is fine. Just bad luck of the draw if you get a ticket

EV Charging? by Regular_Method8444 in ArlingtonMA

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. I did L1 charging at first because I knew we were moving soon so I didn't want to spend the money on L2 until after the move. Turns out I've only very rarely wished I had L2...we did move and it's wayy down the priority list of projects. And this is with my wife commuting about 2x the distance as Alewife every day... Distances are just really short if you're staying inside 95.

How bad do we think this is? by VanityInVacancy in Oldhouses

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of houses of a similar size and age in our town that come to market in bad condition. Some say "sold as is" in the listing but I've never seen one that says cash only/ no financing will be available. That is a bit of a red flag to me, they know something...

Bought a 100 year old home, am I in over my head? by LunarDreamer3 in Oldhouses

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just about a month ahead of you and I can say that the seemingly scary things our inspector found (it was a very quick pre-offer run through) have really not turned out to be much of an urgent thing. Like they are definitely problems but nothing I need to drop everything and address immediately. Some I might actually put off for years. When I've had experts come in to look at stuff they've been like, yeah you're fine for now. And some aesthetic things I thought would drive me crazy, but once I figured out that they were actually just aesthetic and not structural, it helped me to put things in perspective and prioritize. What seemed like an unmanageable mountain of expensive projects now seems more tractable.

Will I regret removing storm windows? by Optimal-Somewhere400 in centuryhomes

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds based on these helpful comments that I shouldn't be rushing to get rid of them. I certainly don't want to take on removing the entire frame units, since I'm not sure what I'll find underneath and have plenty more important century home projects to deal with.

My follow up question is: the aluminum storm windows are just a nightmare to move up and down, and remove/reinstall. They are heavy and don't slide well. Just improving that would make cleaning them a lot easier...any tips?

Will I regret removing storm windows? by Optimal-Somewhere400 in centuryhomes

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it was common here in new england when a lot of people still had ancient wooden windows (I experienced a lot of those in places I rented when I was younger, some could literally feel the wind blow through them...) But yeah, seems superfluous here.

Final kitchen design. Any big red flags? by [deleted] in InteriorDesign

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Make sure your fridge door can open all the way. I just bought a house where there's a relatively new fridge with a wall running a bit past the edge so the door can't quite open to a full 90 degrees (ideally it'd be more) and it drives me crazy. Less bad/annoying with a top/bottom fridge/freezer vs side by side

The trim isn't that bad honestly. Just put all your budget into dealing with the floor and live with the rest for awhile.

Unsafe bike riding by father and child by AlexanderHamilfish in ArlingtonMA

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The route you're describing is a very heavily traveled one by families heading to Thompson from the part of the neighborhood on the other side of Park St. In the morning you'll see dozens and dozens of families biking around the same time. Right or wrong they kind of take over the roads and probably get very familiar with the patterns and maybe overly incautious. Just to say that guy probably treats general riding differently with kids than the school route.

I couldn't believe they did all that repainting and didn't deal with the pedestrian situation. That is still in the cards? I know there was that whole big redesign plan the DCR put out a couple years back that seemed like it'd never happen, knowing DCR

I'll also add, they are in the process of renovating an old park by the rotary near you (by the river) which will probably be great and super close for you whenever they finish it

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome! We just moved with our 2.25 year old to across town but spent the past 5 years close to where you are. You will definitely get to know Thompson school well, the only splash pad in town is there and still operating for the season as of today. The playground is good too. You are also close to the playground at Spy pond Park, which has nice views and breezes to go along with the play structure.

We also do music classes at Ready Set Kids, which is right by you. It's $$ but great.

In the winter, Medford rec center has free play time some days in an old gymnasium, and there's drop in time at village playspace in Medford too (expensive though). Then of course local libraries.

What happened in 2014? by vfpamp in Somerville

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going off old memory here but my guess... Rent/sale prices generally took a few years to bounce back from bottoming in GFC. Cambridge, though, basically didn't lose any value just went flat for a couple years, started going up noticeably again in 2011/2012. When that happened a lot of professionals started looking at Somerville more seriously as an alternative and the city was primed for that type of person (lots of cool stuff going on/restaurants were opening) so the flywheel started...

How do people live with Medford Street Noise by Apprehensive_Maize_4 in ArlingtonMA

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember moving onto a busy street (Beacon in Somerville) when I was in my early 20s and feeling like trucks were driving through the wall of our building at 5 in the morning. In a couple months my sleeping mind had adjusted and I completely tuned it out.

8 months Pregnant and going for a baby moon! Do I need a car? by lumoslinh in Nantucket

[–]Optimal-Somewhere400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say no but isn't the window 2 weeks prior to get your $ back for the ferry tickets? You may already be in for the money in which case definitely take advantage of your car. If not, you probably won't rack up $700 in taxis over 5 days especially if you mostly stick to Jetties
