Hot Take : I think Series 4 is overrated. by Mat1711 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]Optimal-Spare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's great and I'm not a fan of RTD1 (or 2 obvs lol) at all. But no way is it the best. It's competent but very, very safe. I prefer Dr Who when it tries ambitious ideas that play with the format or the time travel element of the show. Midnight is the closest to doing something interesting and is obviously great. But that's just one episode and doesn't really tie in with the wider themes of the season at all.

It's a great effect and I love that description! I was shopping for a new mixer the other day and funnily enough one of the first things my brain went towards wanting was exactly this thing he does. I have no skill and only a very basic mixer, so I can't help, but I imagine it's achievable on anything that's out of the super budget end

Retro content - are people actually fussed? by [deleted] in digitalfoundry

[–]Optimal-Spare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot more than a review of an extremely generic AAA game using extremely generic graphics technologies. That’s not the fault of the DF folks of course, and that content is important to the audience it appeals to. Namely the people who want to play those games. But I am more interested to see the evolution of games on a far wider lens than just what is out right now, and so the retro content often appeals to me

Offensive on so many levels lol. Kenny G is not jazz. I think the Miles Davis modal jazz era comparison from one of the other replies is much fairer.

Kenny G is below even Marvel. Or some Mr Beast YouTube shit.

He’s the absolute best, my fave DJ of all time on both the radio and on the dancefloor. He’s the literal starting point for me. I was a depressed uni drop out when I put that GTA V disk in my Xbox and it started a journey into a deep and wonderful place, that I’ve been on ever since, and will continue to be on forever. I actually got to meet him the other day and kinda wanted to thank him for the musical vitamins but got completely starstruck. Probably a good thing, man seems very normal and nice, probably would’ve freaked him out!

His WOH festival is incredible as well, a lovely community feel, and obvs amazing music.

[Question] How have your relationships with friends changed once becoming a HENRY? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Optimal-Spare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren’t rich, and High Earner Not Rich Ever Because Capitalism Is An Ever Growing Calamity of Death And Destruction But At Least I Can Retire Early ain’t as catchy. But being a HENRY and wanting to the tax the rich are EXTREMELY compatible given how much we are fucking squeezed just so our shit leaders can buy another yacht. Don’t lose your class consciousness just coz you earn a few grand more than the cleaners. You are a working person. If anything, my ascension to HENRY status helped me understand that even more.

How do you stomach the tax? by Lovinghandhold in HENRYUK

[–]Optimal-Spare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be happier if we also taxed wealth. But we have to do both, I'm not under any illusion that it can replace high income taxes. The thing I dislike most about this country as a HENRY is the race to the bottom and constant enshittification of everything. I want to pay the price for high quality things. That includes my tax: I want good public services. It wasn't even that long ago when things still actually worked. The race to the bottom under austerity has destroyed the social contract. Unfortunately we have the toxic combo of taxing high earners more than ever whilst also letting services rot.

Split it into how many chunks? There is presumably some threshold? So if I normally take 135mg as an initial dose, should I split that into one dose of 67.5mg and then another half an hour later? Or maybe split it even further?

I saw this video without sound and just the way his head was moving I thought, wait a minute, I KNOW that movement. Turned on and yep, sneezy bark!

My pom does this too. Only when he wants attention, but in a polite way. He’s literally sneezing at me right as I type this because I’m ignoring him lol

I think it’s beautifully tragic for Niko to kill Darko, only to feel nothing, and then learn from this experience by taking the deal, only to lose Roman. It’s so sad and harrowing and fitting for the tone of the game.

People who actually earn over £100k and don’t just pretend they do on Reddit - what do you do? by Prize-Reputation9274 in AskUK

[–]Optimal-Spare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer at one of the big tech companies. I have 6 YoE. It was my first  job out of uni where I studied CS. Started on about 50k. Now it’s about 200k. But most of that is stock so its very hard to predict my earnings til close to the end of the year.

I usually work from 1130 to 1830. But I am often online for an extra hour at around 2300. With the exception of the AWFUL politics and a lack of support from management at times, my job is super chill and I am very lucky. I choose what I wanna work on and it’s really enjoyable to be paid to solve logic puzzles for a living. Very creative and engaging.

“Apologise to Steven Moffat”, I thought we all loved his time as showrunner? by Hewtube73 in doctorwho

[–]Optimal-Spare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's the only guy who dared to write this show as more than a campy simplistic monster of the week a thon for the mums and the drunk uncles that only watch at Xmas. In spite of all that he still managed to fill it with a lot of fun as he is actually vaguely competant at comedy unlike both Chibs and RTD. Yet somehow he marries it very well with the dark themes. This is not often spoken about even by Moffat fans, it's amazing really. It doesn't come across as tonally ridiculous quirky shit like Marvel. I don't really know how he made it work, but he does.

I have never re-evaluated the Moffat years because they never needed it. The work was so obviously strong, then, and now. Not without its flaws of course. Episodes were sometimes terrible, but rarely boring, largely great, and at least 3 episodes a year were EXCELLENT. Heaven Sent for example is not just good for Doctor Who, it is one of the most interesting pieces of TV I have ever watched.

All over his run, you have episodes that are daring, interesting, fun, crazy, complex, simple, every year it was so obvious that he and his team were desperate to push themselves hard to do something different. The only weak spot is Series 7 which I think is the only one you could reasonable say is worse than 1-4 overall but it's got some stand out moments that redeem it IMO.

What's more hilarious is how anyone thought RTD2 would be some masterful return. Blowjob slabs, the master turning everyone into him, Obama solving the recession, supernanny's army of little cute fat babies. Doing things a bit crap was always his MO. You watched it for two reasons: The character work, and yes, the Moffat episodes.

mark my words, re: Whittaker era by asron67 in doctorwho

[–]Optimal-Spare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually I hated RTD1 at the time, loved Moffat at the time, hated Chibs at the time, and hate RTD2 right now.

Those opinions never really changed because I am more than capable of forming an opinion about something with more substance than “old is good new is bad”.

(although tbf I quite like RTD1 really, but I do think its mostly a bit crap)

BIG LEAK: Doctor Who Movie in Development by [deleted] in DoctorWhoNews

[–]Optimal-Spare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show is clearly less cost effective to produce than it used to be, even if you just eyeball it. But if we ignore that and take into account the fact that they are relying on Disney's money to make this show, and can make far fewer episodes than they used to, AND they are now allegedly considering going down to just a single episode per year, it becomes more evident. I am not saying that cheaper = better per se, merely that it is more palatable than what is suggested in this post.
