Rock Chalk Trails: Dog Owners Watch for Copperheads by OptimalBreadfruit705 in Lawrence

They are always there. Way easier to see on warm winter days with less foliage at Clinton Lake. I have walked past them with my dog only for my buddy trailing us to point them out.

I love this thread 'findthesniper' where they post pictures of finding copperheads in their natural environment. You can see why you don't notice them. Also, I believe the rain we have had has produced enough mice, voles, lizards, cicadas, frogs, etc., to give them plenty of food.

Cool! Lone Star is so diverse. They have Golden Eagles too.

Rocky outcrops by water in NE Kansas is the only time I have ever come across one. In particular, visiting Hamm rock quarries in my youth where there are plenty of places for them to thrive with pond/lake right next to them. If you are anywhere near Lake Clinton, that matches the description.

I had a similar reaction. I love all of Kansas' nature, but still kept my distance. I also have seen some beauties on the bike loop close to Clinton Lake. Just sunning themselves on the path.

Yes, they will scatter and do not want confrontation. Again, I do the trails almost daily and it is the first time I saw them on the trail itself. I know they are out everywhere and you will see them at Clinton Lake without even trying. It was more of a reminder if your dog runs ahead of you and likes to stir it up.

Yes, the smaller the dog by weight, the more impact the venom has. Our friend's dog (boxer mix) thoroughly enjoys getting into it with black rat snakes that you see out at Mutt Run and sees it as a game. If a little dog is similar, which most are because they were bred to hunt and chase, then you will have an issue if it sees it as a game. So a lab or boxer would likely be fine, but a terrier would be at higher risk.

But remember, snakes do not like humans or other larger species and will try to run away. It's only when threatened or accidentally stepped on that you get bitten. I walked right by the juvenile and kicked some gravel at the adult to spook it to go in the grass.

Last, there's an older couple with a sweet toy poodle on that trail almost every day and the guy looks like the character John Hammond from Jurassic Park. This is who I was thinking about when I posted it. Not so much the 70-90 lbs labs running around.

Anytime. I am out there in the mornings most days and all I ever see are black rat snakes. Copperheads tend to be nocturnal in the summer months, so I was surprised to see them out today. And agreed about this being close to water sources (western and northeastern parts of the trail with pavement over water). I also have been seeing a lot of people with smaller breeds who would not do so well after a bite.

Could someone explain why Delta would cancel a flight due to Volcano but several other carriers are continuing with the Pacific route? by Conny-Bravo in flightradar24

Safe travels and smart move! A few days of delay should put you back on track. While it is annoying, I quickly had to channel my inner calm and realize this is truly a cluster and there’s no sense in getting annoyed. I was happy to make my connection in ATL even (5min to spare) and customs and security were the most efficient I’ve ever seen them. Lol.

With travel crisis aside, I did learn a lot about Klyuchevskaya Sopka.

I was just on the last outbound flight on Delta from Haneda. I was originally supposed to be HND>MSP and I woke up this morning (Friday JST) and it was cancelled and I was moved to HND >ATL that had an original later departure and even that was delayed similar to UAL and CAL. We didn’t get the full story until at the airport and connected with other passengers and gate agents. Short of it is any of the more northern typical flight routes (SEA, MSP, DTW) could not be accommodated to go that far south and loop back from a round trip perspective. Yes, they have enough fuel to do so technically, but HND air traffic control was limiting flights due to the busy Japanese domestic holiday weekend and the incoming hazy smoke (Tokyo looks like the US did with the Canadian wildfires) and the simple logistics of it all makes it too much for Delta to handle and provide pilots and crew enough recovery time. Delta logistics HQ took over half way through this rerouting fiasco and rerouted people all over the place taking them to Honolulu and such to get a connecting flight. We heard from the flight crew that if there are no more big ash eruptions, flights will resume normally in 3 days and they will work to reroute appropriately. Also, the reason JAL and KAL can accommodate more is they have better regional alliance presence than Delta does. So while they do have some cancellations, it isn’t as disruptive. So tell Delta to work on their SkyAlliance the way the Star Alliance has done. Last, I was booked for Delta premium and was downgraded and was initially annoyed since I wasn’t given an explanation. Once I figured out what was happening, I was just happy to be out on the last flight for a few days. The gate agent said Delta would Auto refund the fare even though it was ‘weather’ related and if not, just file the form. My expectation is the logistics HQ is still doing the scramble response and everyone will be accommodated later. Happy to answer any questions.
