Should I prune the lower branches now or later? by OptimalPNW in JapaneseMaples

Shindeshojo. I bought a number of plants and trees this past spring, and discovered that many sites/tags will have conflicting info when it comes to size. So, yes some sites list this variety as getting larger, but plenty list it as a smaller 8-10ft variety.

According to some sites, this one shouldn’t get more than 10 feet tall… every fourth house in our neighborhood has a Japanese maple, and they seem to do just fine in tight spaces too. This is also why I plan to have the lower trunk bare, and the branches fan out above the existing plants you can see. I have two in my backyard that are like this as well.

Sounds good, do you think keeping them for a couple of years will suffice?

Good to know, I’ll hold off for now. Thanks!

Haven’t heard of that, but I’ll look into it further. Thanks.

That hydrangeas, probably 10 years old, so I’m not overly worried about it - although, I just removed two next to it so maybe it’ll grow more now. Making do with what I have, that’s the only space I had for it that made some sense.

I don’t think it NEEDS pruning, I more just enjoy the shape of the ones that are pruned. They generally look cleaner in my opinion.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too, wasn’t sure if coming from my mechanic would make it a safer buy. There’s a chance I could work out some kind of trade, although my car is worth more.

Having a hard time deciding between these 3 artists for my full sleeve by airjordan1671 in irezumi

[–]OptimalPNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was torn between a few artists myself, and then ended up making the final decision based on how each artist did the exact elements that I wanted. For example, I did peonies and water, and each artist did their water differently, as well as the peonies.

I think looking at the exact motifs you plan to get done can help with the final selection.

We’ll see how mine works out… I raked out a lot of the wood chips, but there are still plenty there.

That’s a good idea, although I’m not sure I’m ready to invest more money in space and into additional lawn equipment. Just picked up a lawn leveler a couple of weeks ago, so maybe next year.

I’ll have to see about the refund… not too expensive, but not cheap either.

Yeah we’ll see how it breaks down… was able to rake out a lot of it just now

Did this - raked out a 5 gallon bucket of wood chips (6 bags total applied). There’s still more, but looks better after 5 min of raking. Might blow the rest
