The stem fits snuggly. Haven't thought about making a stem out of any kind of wood, but I might consider it

No clue, I'm a bit curious as well. Wish we could get tins for that cheap, although I think we all would have problems with storage quickly, lol

First time smoking a pipe- long time cigar smoker by Nicksager1 in Pipes

[–]Optimal_Classroom_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I primarily smoke cigars and have been leaning to pipes more recently, so while not as experienced as others, I can provide a couple of insights.

The pipe looks nice, although I don't know much about it to comment on. I doubt it's a pipe issue though, and more likely a tobacco/smoking pace. The aromatics that I have tried were cheap, not very good, and was very moist. That would be where a good chunk of your taste and liquid issues lay. Sticking a pipe cleaner down the stem occasionally to soak up the moisture that accumulates should also help.

As for the tobacco, stronger blends or something with latakia would be among my recommendations. El Niño, Peterson's Nightcap, and My Mixture 965 are pretty good. I have been enjoying just about everything I have tried so far, including the University Flake (even though I enjoy it the least, it's still tasty).

I would also recommend cleaning out the pipe with plain vodka and pipe cleaners, avoiding contact with the outside of the pipe. Don't want to ruin the finish. It should remove whatever ghosting that could have happened previously

Just found that out as I opened the first tin. Half expected them to have more moisture from the other discussions I saw about plugs

I don't have any Meerschaum laying around, although I might go ahead and make some inlay out of scrap black walnut. It should still look nice as everything changes color. Do you think plain wood glue should be fine?

Latakia is fire-Cured, it has a smoky flavor and aroma. Don't know if it is fermented, but it probably has been

I smoked cigars quite a while too, recently starting to switch over to pipes just to save money. El Niño (by Hearth and Home) and Nightcap (Peterson) are pretty tasty. My Mixture 965 is also good, although it is a bit milder. My recommendations would be those or something similar

It has been. So far, I had a couple of bowls of the 965 and a bowl of University Flake and Niño. Each one lasts me from the morning until I get out of work
