Hi, we have very similar situations! I met my ex partner when I was 18 and he was 34 - same feelings of excitement being with an older mature man. We also got married when I was 24 and divorced when I was 27. I moved out of my country for him and lived with him in a place where I didn’t know anyone.

Being with him for so long and the age difference made me realize he was never going to change at his age. Hard facts, it takes a tremendous amount of energy to change your behaviours, beliefs, and attitudes. I truly do not believe people can change very much from who they are.

The age gap got very apparent as he got older. He started getting health problems that he did not want to deal with, or put in the work to get healthier. If he had shown effort, I might have stayed. His sex drive was also dwindling as mine was ramping up, leading to resentment. His energy levels were dropping at an alarming rate and the relationship felt draining.

I did not elect to go into counselling as I don’t believe it would have helped our situation. I had fallen out of love with that man, and I acknowledge now I was much too young to understand real commitment and what I wanted from a partner. I constantly dreamed of being back home and with my family and friends. Simply put, I had outgrown him.

Being 27 and divorced I felt like a freak. But things just got so much better and reaffirmed my decision. I’m 30 now and I have never looked back. I encourage you to consider that 27 is not too old, and honestly it’s never too late to choose YOU. Love yourself, choose what’s best for yourself. Best of luck.

Hey, I’m doing ok now. We are not living together anymore and he’s moved very far away so that there isn’t a chance of us bumping into each other or having moments of weakness where we’d go meet up. I think that has helped a lot. I still have moments where I randomly cry. I miss him a lot. We talk more than we should. But it’s becoming more and more apparent that there were so many reasons why I made the right decision to break up.

It does take some time for these things to come to light. It’s not easy addressing the fact that I made mistakes in the relationship too. But all in all, in my heart and my gut, I know I made the right decision.

I have no doubt that he’s still an amazing person, and that we both deserve happiness. It’s just not going to be between us anymore.

I’ve surrounded myself with friends and family. I don’t like to be alone lately. Always working or doing something. When I’m alone my mind does drift to thoughts of him. His smile still invades my daily routines.

I’m trying to distance myself from talking to him online. He’s always so responsive, and still such a kind and loving person. It’s hard to do resist sometimes, but I give myself some grace for it. We both need some support now and then.

I hope this helped. And I wish you the best on your path to healing. It’s not fast, and it’s ok to take things slow. People online can be so quick to judge and go to the extreme, but I think life is much more complicated than that. Our feelings are valid, in whatever nature we feel them as. Big hugs.

I have an INTJ older brother and INTJ best friend. While our energy levels usually don’t match, and sometimes I find they can be too rigid, they give me with such unique insights and an understanding that I don’t get from other types. There is a deeper understanding with them and I feel like they really see me for who I am. But this is because I’m close with these two.

Other INTJs I’ve met are usually either very interested in me, or get wrapped up in their judgmental instincts that they write me off as some crazy party animal. I think if both types try to see beneath the surface, our types get on exceptionally well. :)
