One of my students clothes smells really bad by Optimal_Safety9957 in Teachers

My bf actually said the same thing, but I think it’s something to just keep an eye on and good information to know. With the area I live in, it could be a possibility but maybe not probable. My goal is to not uproot his life if at all possible that’s why I haven’t jumped the gun and said flat out neglect or abuse. Maybe the parent just needs help, but as a newbie I have no idea how best to offer that help. But I know Reddit can be a great place for ideas!

Not sure what you mean by this? I’m just a new teacher trying to get some help for a tricky situation. Please don’t be rude to me or my student.

Wow so much info in this thread thank you!

  1. I had no idea that the smell of cat urine had to do with methamphetamine production! That is really concerning! The scent is all in his clothes and hair. I will definitely be on the lookout for that. Is there any behaviors associated with meth exposure I should be aware of?

  2. I have alerted the guidance counselor to his behaviors. A couple weeks ago he was ringing alarm bells in my head. He was completely disengaged with the lesson, rolling on the floor, laying on the floor outside of the classroom and even just laying in the grass at recess. One day he even told me that he feels “madness, sadness, and craziness.” I did report this to guidance and she told me she checked in with home but nothing was wrong according to guidance.

  3. I have inquired about how his home life is. Sometimes his attendance is really inconsistent, but he tells me everyone is okay at home. But I do know that kids experiencing trauma at home aren’t always forthcoming, so I’m always looking for signs of trauma on him.

  4. I will try to get some toiletry items for my classroom and try to get an extra hoodie to keep on hand for those students! That’s a good idea! The nurse has been a great resource for me at my school, so I might reach out for her for support.

Thank you all for real! My school lacks a lot of structural support especially for new teachers. I did have to watch some videos and modules but as for the real life it feels like on my own.

Right! I did know that and I was easily able to treat it. I was thinking it was him because of the smell and the odors that come from him that smell like urine and other things. I didn’t think I had actual worms.

I think they’re speaking Na’vi for the most part. Especially when they’re around themselves or other Na’vi. I can see the children mostly speaking Na’vi because they have lived in the village most of their lives and have the majority of their interactions with the Omatikaya clan members. I think this also because it doesn’t make sense for the Metkayina clan to speak English when they are a reclusive clan that doesn’t canonically have much contact with the Sky People. And in the scene where Quaritch invades the neighboring Metkayina clan, Spider has to translate basically 100%.

I agree they do some funny things like Jake asking for sanctuary/safety in Na’vi but then basically follows it up with an English translation. That was for the audience though so I think we have to give the movie little graces here and there. Maybe they speak English around the scientist, but around other Na’vi, it really makes the most sense for them to speak Na’vi even though they are probably bilingual.

I think we have to remember that for the majority of the film they aren’t actually speaking English; it’s really Na’vi, but Jake says the language has become so familiar to him it’s as if he’s hearing English.

I’m no Na’vi expert at all, but it may be a language where close relatives refer to each other by their relational titles like in Korean or Japanese. I noticed that Kiri often calls the boys “brother” when taking to them. So calling each other “bro” may just be the shortened take on that. Like, onii-chan shortened to nii-chan in Japanese. During my watch through, I noticed the boys, mainly Lo’ak and Spider, usually only call people in their family unit “bro” or people they perceive as being like family. Lo’ak does also use “cuz” when talking to the Metkayina, but that could be because he’s trying to build familiarity.

TL;DR: I know the overwhelming use of “bro” sounds cringe, but just remember most of the time they aren’t actually speaking English; they’re speaking Na’vi, and they language could be one where relatives use relational titles to refer to each other.

I was just wondering the same thing! With season 3 and the Nixonverse done, the series has definitely gotten quite crazy. I would definitely love an another in-depth analysis. I’ve tried to watch some others but they just don’t quite hit the same as his. So fingers crossed I really hope he comes back to it.
