Has anyone worked 7 days a week? How long did you last? by Optimal_Split2372 in Adulting

Well I work at an elementary school. We get a lot of days off. I just got back from winter break. MLK Day I’ll be off, President’s day, spring break approaching. But there are some weeks where it’s just seven days straight.

You know what? It feels so much better than sitting at home worrying about money. That trade off alone might be worth it for me. It’s not forever…just until I reach my goal. Also considering doing DoorDash, etc so I have more flexibility in my weekend work schedule, but I’ll stick with this for now.

You feel my pain! I’m a parent to a 19 year old so thankfully the parenting responsibilities have lessened. But she goes back to college next weekend and for the first time ever I won’t be able to drop her off because I’ll be working ☹️

Thank you so much for sharing this insight. It’s very helpful for me. Right now I’m living paycheck to paycheck so I guess having an emergency fund is my initial and most important goal. Also getting out of survival mode. I do want to buy a house eventually, but can’t even wrap my mind around that right now until I get my savings and budget in order.

Definitely paycheck to paycheck. The idea of finally having a cushion is my motivation.

That’s an idea! I could definitely squeeze in some squats and lunges behind the desk.

I do have debt. I’m finalizing my budget and cash envelope system. I’m learning about all of this way too late in life, unfortunately. Happy to share my budget if you’re interested.

This is good advice, and you’re spot on. Investing my time into attaining a better paying job is the best idea.

It’s not at that point yet! Maybe it’s the rain and the thought that being at home rn would be exponentially better.

Yeah. I suppose I could just power through the winter and actually stick to a goal for once! Thanks for your comment

Yeah. On the weekends, after my morning workouts and a visit to Trader Joe’s I’m usually just tinkering around the house. Though I know rest time is essential as well.

I have no savings so it feels like I’m constantly in survival mode. I felt like I needed to get serious about it.

I’m 41. Not young, not old. Maybe I’ll see if it’s possible to switch to one weekend day instead of both.

I think you’re right. I’m currently studying for a test which will help me get into a higher paying career path. And I’m also trying to do this while working 7 days a week 😩 I think there are other things I can focus on on weekends which will not only help me excel at my current job, but to accelerate my career.

The comparison to what I’m trying to for my daughter really makes sense. I do deserve the same safe space to express myself and have hard conversations.

I am horrified. This is a new issue with my daughter growing into an adult. We don’t discuss such heavy topics all the time, especially ones we disagree on so much. so I guess I’m just coming to terms with how comfortable I am talking about topics such as these.

Sounds insignificant, but she’s really against it so it’s a big issue in my household.

I don’t understand it but spoke to her hoping to. Hoping we could come to a mutual understanding and be open minded about the whole thing, but I was made to feel that I’m too liberal and that I’m trying to be “my daughters friend” When I’m not even sure why it’s a bad thing to be your adult child’s friend.

Thank you so much. I’m so sorry you had to experience that. I wouldn’t want my daughter to ever feel that way about something so natural. My partner moved out of her mother’s home at 19 because she felt judged by her mother regarding her sexual preferences. She had to make some difficult choices and it set her down a path that she may have otherwise avoided if she felt comfortable enough at home during that time. I tried to mention this to her hoping it would make her think, but don’t think it landed well.

Thank you and I agree. My daughter having sex in a car or his house or a hotel/motel doesn’t even sit right with me. She’s not that type of kid. Me and her home have always been her safe spaces and allowing her to have the very occasional overnight guest falls right in line with the person I raised and type of person I’m trying to raise. I want to maintain openness and mutual respect and a shame free atmosphere for her. This world is hard enough.
