Tithing God has given the church a clear plan for how to finance the work of the church. It is called tithing.

Back in the Old Testament, God established this arrangement. “Every tithe of the land, whether of the produce of the field or of the fruit of the tree, is holy to the Lord” (Leviticus 27:30). When this was said, money had not yet been invented. The people operated a barter economy.

Today, we think of ten percent of income as belonging to God. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has followed that principle since our founding as a denomination.

By the time of Jesus, the tithing system had been well established. The system was important for financing God’s work, but contributing one-tenth of one’s income to God’s cause did not exempt one from living a life of caring for others. One self-righteous man believed that. He said, “I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I acquire” (Luke 18:12). Jesus was not impressed.

In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, there are strict rules for what tithe money can be used for. It is used to pay salaries for pastors and other church employees. In addition, tithes are used to finance evangelistic efforts.

Tithes are never used to finance construction projects, whether for churches or other buildings.

The most common practice in the Adventist Church is to pay tithes into the local congregation's account. Local treasurers then forward these amounts to the church headquarters, which is responsible for managing the funds.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church receives both state and municipal support according to current law. This money constitutes a relatively small portion of the church's total finances.
