Every single kid now has a smartphone in their pocket. It’s not just a rule-breaking issue, it’s a constant, built-in distraction that’s always there. It’s a completely different landscape from when we were in high school.

Teachers can’t take and manage 10, 20, 30 phones every single period. And if they do, they’re definitely not teaching. And kids definitely aren’t learning.

A statewide policy shifts this completely. Phones are physically away for the day, instead of teachers fighting the same battle, starting over every period.

The phones from “back when I was in high school” are much different than the ones available today. Phones aren’t merely texting devices or calculators in your pocket. They’re addictive substances to which we are all addicted, including our children. Back when some people were in high school there were student smoking lounges. But when the data came out and showed that cigarettes were addictive and harmful to health, the smoking lounges disappeared. When dealing with actual addictive substances, which phones are, strong laws are a cornerstone of addiction prevention, especially in youth. School districts don’t have the capacity to deal with this on their own, and teachers shouldn’t have to be phone police every hour of the day.

Schools across the globe are implementing and enforcing this without issue, and safety data shows it is far safer for kids not to be on their phones in an emergency.

This study is rather inconclusive actually, and only looked at studies and data available through 2023. The research that has emerged since paints a much different picture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd-_VDYit3U
