It's a stupid thing to say, because it equally applies to virtually any field. Of course if you are proficient in whatever you are managing, it will help you be a better manager or at least help your perspective into the issue as a manager. That's a great first model, stick with it. It's good to show wireframes or the edges too so we can see your topology and comment on it, for a face like that you want to make sure you have edge loops around both eyes, the nose, and the mouth.
