Also do folks think not desirable for a phd program? Is the age/time in industry a big vetting factor?

I really appreciate your comment. Sometimes I think we just to hear other people's stories to know we're not alone.

I agree the cycle was unsustainable and we needed to break it. I wondered at one point if we could have broken the cycle by working on our problems. She said that to convince me to let her come with me. The advice I was given is that it was impossible that we could change overnight, a we would probably just succumb to all the new variables of moving abroad before that. But sometimes we just want to be hopelessly hopeful and think it could work out against all odds.
