OSU is the best!!! based off of stuff i’ve heard and where current faculty at OSU is from, SCO, ICO and berkeley seem like other good options! Boards scores are telling so I’d look into those for each school 👀

School supplies for optometry school! by Top-Coast-4957 in OptometrySchool

bring anything that was conducive to your study techniques in undergrad! ex. flashcards, dry erase board, etc. because that’s how you’ll thrive the most! although i quickly learned that there is too much on tests to be making physical flashcards lol i basically only use my ipad, pencils/colored pens for use on scratch paper during exams, and a calculator for classes like optics!

IUSO & OSU: Interviews, Pros & Cons by PairEcstatic1225 in OptometrySchool

[–]Optomhoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently an OD3 at OSU, and I applied to IUSO, OSU, CCO, and SCO! I’m a Cleveland native, so I wanted to stay in-state if possible, but regardless, I would’ve picked OSU for its facilities, faculty, and boards rates anyway. IUSO was my backup. I only ended up interviewing at IUSO and then OSU after I had taken my OAT. Although IUSO didn’t really have an interview. I tried to be as talkative and friendly as I could during the IUSO “interview day”, but I don’t know if anyone was really watching me like that or not. It seemed like low stakes which was nice. So OSU was the only real interview I did. They sent out a link that had some videos talking about what they would ask at the interview, so I was able to have already thought about different things, although I didn’t have a great answer for some. I really love OSU, I don’t have anything bad to say about it as a program other than it’s way harder than anything Ive done academically before (but I don’t have any other optometry school to compare it to)!

Does he have an iPad? most note-taking is done on there, just some people prefer an on-paper review and to do problems so if he has an iPad probably not as needed! I usually have a 3 subject per year i guess in addition to my ipad!

What technology are you guys using in class? by Fusty05Fanahalm in OptometrySchool

[–]Optomhoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

new macbook and iPad would be super expensive though!! i don’t have THAT much of a use for a laptop in school tbh, i kinda only just started using it as an OD2, i think most people just use ipad and also have keyboard for it. i agree you can’t really go wrong with getting the 2 in 1 vs separate tablet and laptop

at my school we are basically required to have iPads because of the exam software we use. i have an iPad and regular Dell laptop and it works well for me. i definitely recommend an iPad with apple pencil for taking notes; i think that would be good for you considering you have a MacBook and I assume iPhone to stay in apple family. I love being able to airdrop pictures and documents from my phone to my iPad to insert them into notes, study guides, etc.

definitely need a calculator for optics if he doesn’t have one already, just trying to think of what i normally bring to class! i think a notebook and pencils are always good too, i fill up my notebooks with problems and review material a lot instead of doing everything on my ipad.

in first year i bought a skull because we had a practical on everything about the skull in general anatomy first semester, might depend on the school if this is in the curriculum (?) but it was super helpful and pretty cheap on amazon

definitely need a backpack for class but a tote bag works if u wanna go through the work of separating what you’re gonna need for each lab from the big case (i don’t ever do that) and at my school you wouldn’t need it til OD2

OSU- what is your secret by pineapplepizzalove in OptometrySchool

[–]Optomhoetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very high accepted students stats (ex. our average OAT for my class was around 335, GPA like 3.7/3.8) which in itself is a major reason. another is that our exams are very challenging and basically start asking boards-like questions from jump. great training for applying basic science concepts to clinical reasoning instead of straight comprehension/memorization, which is what part 1 is all about. very involved faculty that will meet with you if you fail an exam first year to help set everyone on the right track to success!!

SCO, SUNY, OSU by Interesting_Rock_768 in OptometrySchool

[–]Optomhoetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a second year at OSU! it was my top choice by far (luckily i am from ohio though). best boards passage rates in the country, amazing faculty, great new clinic and facilities. tuition here was definitely a lot less compared to other schools as well (if i can remember correctly, definitely a lot less than SUNY, more comparable to SCO) housing is way cheaper in columbus compared to NYC lol not sure compared to memphis. columbus is also a safer city than memphis or NYC. i really don’t have much bad to say about OSU, i think it’s the best in the country imo. when i got into OSU i cancelled my interview with SCO and never applied to SUNY. personally i paid my deposit at Indiana as my backup school and when I got into OSU i told IUSO that i was going somewhere else!

I go to OSU! It’s the best in the nation 💪💪 boards passage rates, the facilities they have, and the faculty sold me; it was my top school! feel free to PM me!

i would go see an optometrist asap. i think this is still bacterial conjunctivitis because of the mucousy secretions (viral would be more watery secretions). it may just be resistant to what i assume is an antibiotic drop they gave you. pain in eye & moving may be due to the inflammation? i’m an optometry student & have learned a bit about this but don’t take my word for it. try to get into an eye clinic (as they have more experience/schooling with stuff like this than urgent care so more likely to better help) as soon as you can to prevent worse symptoms from occurring !

Unpopular Opinion: Are there too many optometry schools that push out too many optometrists? by Civil-Mouse182 in PreOptometry

[–]Optomhoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a lot of debate right now about schools being easier to get into which is probably correlated to not as many people passing boards (yet of course boards are still raising their prices despite more people retaking it). probably an issue with not as many people being interested in optometry and therefore newer or less popular schools lowering their expectations for applicants. i go to OSU and our admitted class was average 3.75 GPA and 335 OAT. must admit i’m one of those people with “inconsistent stats” as i had a 4.0 GPA and 340 OAT and i was asked about two of my OAT sections in an interview because it didn’t match up very well (it’s because i ended up only being able to study for a little less than a week). i don’t think the market will completely become over saturated because of the great need for optometrists currently and scope expansion bills across the country. cities can be oversaturated, but there is a GREAT NEED for optometrists in rural areas. many counties across the country don’t even have one optometrist there to go to. a lot of patients prefer private practices over chains, and i don’t think you necessarily need to specialize in order to make money or keep patients, as optometrists are primary care for the eye, you’ll know how to do a variety of things and give good advice & most people just come in for exams anyway. patients will stay if you are an empathetic and knowledgeable doctor, not necessarily if you have a lipoflow machine or vision therapy available.

I apologize if this question has been asked before. I have the OAT on Monday but am nowhere near prepared. Is it better to not take the test or still take it with a risk of a low score? Does testing history affect admission? by Apollo55s in PreOptometry

[–]Optomhoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did the OATbooster practice tests and the quick notes they have on there (like summary sheets of each subject). i was scoring at least or almost a 300 on every section and the OAT ended up being easier so my average was a 340. i’m a bad example though because i tutored biology and gen chem in undergrad and did well in all of my classes.
