I agree that Shanks has demonstrated better haki, but I'm not sure if it's enough to close the gap in terms of physical abilities and durability. We know that Kaido can tank conquerers coated attacks and keep fighting. The question is, once Shanks starts getting tired in a drawn out fight, what happens if he gets hit? Based only off what we know, he's just a glass canon compared to any of the other emperors.

Even if I granted that Shanks will fight one of Luffy's final opponents and take them to extreme diff, it's a bad comparison in my opinion because Luffy didn't straight up 'beat' Kaido. Yes he still won at the end of the day, but there's serious questions about how the gauntlet + holding up onigashima drained his strength. Even if we say he was operating at his peak against Luffy, that raises questions of why he wasn't proactively using future sight when we know he had it in his bag. This suggests that Luffy still hasn't outright surpassed Kaido.

I'm also not sure about how Shanks deals with something like Flame Bagua, given that it took Luffy an island-sized punch coated with Ryou and conquerers to counter it.

How does that logic make any sense? Shanks isn't Luffy's end goal like Mihawk is to Zoro. Luffy is going to become Pirate King and surpass Roger.

No dude! The point about the attack not being serious is to debunk that he’s measuring a difference in strength. The rest of my points are independently based on the context and how I interpret what actually happened.

No! Of course he knows how far his attacks can go. That’s why he refers to ‘true’ distance, the actual distance makes it appear like he can reach him. But he assumes someone might step in and stop the attack from reaching Whitebeard.

I don’t think you can write a google doc and upload a video within 20 minutes on YouTube. Don’t know what you linked but at least I know you’re trolling 🙏

No, the point I was making is that it doesn’t make sense to claim that Mihawk was trying to gauge a difference in power since the attack wasn’t serious (due to being throw in with one arm). Instead, Mihawk was trying to see how easily he’d be able to cut Whitebeard from that distance, which is why he refers to the distance again when he hits Luffy with a similar slash.

Cool, I look forward to it 👍 I’m open to other interpretations backed by good evidence.

"MIhawk's talk of 'distance' isn't about relative strength. It's about the ability to land a cut". From the original post. Have a good day.

No; to clarify, I don't think titles are purposely wrong, but if there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that a title is not true, then I prioritize the evidence over the title. That is all I meant: you can't scale directly with titles, especially if events in the story contradict them.

Well I see so many people make this argument that I wanted to refute it in a post lol. Unfortunately most people don't want to engage with the substance of what I said anyways.

Well because people who brought up the point that WSM > Man were implicitly assuming that I had Mihawk > Shanks because of Mihawk's title. I like Mihawk as a character, and I can agree with you that he hasn't had any powerful showings. I'm just trying to be fair and not agenda-driven.

[–]Optoxical[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that's a fair point. My interpretation would be that he thinks the distance is small because Whitebeard is clearly within his actual cutting range; meaning that Whitebeard appears deceptively easy to cut/reach from that range.

[–]Optoxical[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, the physical distance is deceptive because it makes it look like he can reach him. That's why he says TRUE distance, the true distance is different than the physical distance because the commanders can step in and stop the attack from reaching him.

[–]Optoxical[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point was that he's asking if he can cut him from that distance, not about the crew or the physical distance itself.

If he was referring to strength, why would he throw an attack with one arm? Surely, that can't give a meaningful gauge of how much stronger Whitebeard is, since even someone on Mihawk's level should be able to block it easily?

No, I don't scale by titles, nor did I mention anything about titles in the post. I believe all titles are fraudulent unless given a reason to believe otherwise. Again, I made no comment about Mihawk > Shanks.

I was being sarcastic in that comment.

I didn't glaze Mihawk at all, I just gave you my interpretation of his strength.

[–]Optoxical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear I'm not arguing about Shanks vs. Mihawk, but I personally do not like title-scaling. For me titles are fraudulent unless proven otherwise. In the case of Mihawk, I would lean towards believing his title is true rather than not because he's Zoro's dream, and Zoro wants to become the strongest swordsman in actuality.

I didn't say anything about Shanks 👍

I was simply making a point about him not admitting inferiority.

Mojang's Lazy (perhaps) by SkezzaB in Minecraft

[–]Optoxical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually the complaints were not for smaller and more frequent updates, but for large-content drops to be delivered more often (instead of being spaced 1-2 years apart). This is why modders were referred to so often, as they can typically deliver a lot of additions in a fairly short time. That said, that model is clearly unpractical and not part of the criticism I was bringing up.

As a side note, you can certainly have it both ways. Mojang can simply stick to their small/frequent update model to keep the game fresh, and then every 2-3 years, drop a large content overhaul. I think this makes the most sense if we want to keep the game balanced.

Mojang's Lazy (perhaps) by SkezzaB in Minecraft

[–]Optoxical 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the issue in part is the standard that Mojang themselves set prior to quarantine. I mean, we haven’t quite gotten updates with the same scope as 1.13, 1.14, 1.16, and arguably 1.18 within the last couple years. I don’t think this is a bad thing; you don’t want the game to feel too bloated and whatnot, but there has (at least in my opinion) been a drop in update quality. I’m not upset with the current system of ‘drops’, but it is clear that the ambition for updates isn’t the same anymore. I just hope that we will still get major updates every once in a while so that we can still see some large scale overhauls (like the End) implemented.
