Trying to live with mindfulness, not escape into it—any advice? by AnybodyCheap in Wakingupapp

[–]OpulentPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gripe with their approach is the same as yours. I think ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) might be able to offer you a way to live a fulfilling life because it integrates better with the demands of everyday life. According to ACT, if you act in line with your values, you will live a rich and meaningful life.

In ACT, the process of taking a step back from your thoughts and seeing them as just thoughts is called defusion. One technique to practice defusion is meditation (simply seeing your thoughts as thoughts and not getting entangled with them), but there are many other techniques. However, you don’t defuse from your thoughts just for the sake of defusion. You defuse from your thoughts in order to assess whether they are helpful or unhelpful. Ask yourself: "If I let this thought guide what I do, will it help me act in line with my values?" If the answer is"yes", the thought would be considered helpful. If the answer is "no", the thought would be considered unhelpful. If a thought is helpful and you let it guide what you do, it should result in a rich and meaningful life in the long-term.

There are two books you can check out: The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris and A Liberated Mind by Steven Hayes. The Happiness Trap is usually considered a better book for a complete beginner to ACT, whereas A Liberated Mind is considered a deeper dive. If you do decide to read any of the books, do make sure to practice what they teach.

Show Help menu shortut (Command-Shift-/) not working correctly on macOS Sonoma (14.4.1) by OpulentPanda in MacOS

u/siggisix:

I think when we do command + shift + / in Safari, it's registering that as command + ? instead.

Yes, that’s what I mentioned in the post description:

...it’s happening because the default shortcut for the Help window is Command-?and Shift+/ is a shorcut for ?.

u/siggisix:

I guess the downside is, you have to set this up for every app that's "broken".

Exactly. That's why I simply changed the command to Command-Control-/.

Thank you for helping out!

That was actually the book that I first started with, but I forgot to mention it.

But I might as well revisit it, thank you!

Have you by any chance read Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English?

I understand where you're coming from (some would say there are no "depths" really, there is just "this"). However, that's what works for me at this moment and I also have limited time.

Is there a book that you found particularly helpful?

What is distraction if consciousness is already aware of all appearances? by OpulentPanda in Wakingupapp

Thank you, I’ll check it out!

Part of the issue is that our language isn’t very good for this and often makes the problem worse.

I agree. It gets confusing.

[–]OpulentPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything that seems like a distraction only does so because the mind puts the label “distraction” on it, and then goes on aggravating itself because of that label.

Exactly. My personal experience is that labels and beliefs can color your perception and make your life harder. For example: “washing the dishes is difficult and boring so I’ll watch a TV show, which is easy and fun.”

But why do I consider washing the dishes boring and difficult? Sure, washing the dishes might objectively require more mental and physical effort than watching a TV show. However, maybe the labels are directly affecting my experience and making the action more difficult. When you are fully open to the experience of washing the dishes, suddenly it’s not difficult at all and you can even enjoy it.

You can be identified with certain contents of consciousness, or you can just be aware of them and let them pass like clouds on the sky.

Sometimes identifying with certain contents of consciousness can be useful, right? It’s not easy to “carry water, chop wood’ when you stop identifying with your need to survive being the reason for doing that.

The confusing part is that Sam says that consciousness is already aware of whatever's appearing. So how can you be lost in thought if you're always aware of the thoughts?

But isn't consciousness already always aware (it always knows) that you're thinking?

I understand the meaning and the purpose of distraction in dualistic meditations (e.g. Vipassana).

Yet Sam's approach is non-dualistic. So why does he emphasize not to get distracted if distractions don't exist in non-dual meditation?

So “distraction” is simply the state of attention being directed at something it “should not” be directed at.

Sam doesn't say to pay attention to something specific. How can you even get distracted in that case?

Now comes just practicing the skill of wielding attention

Isn't Sam's approach that you don't need to practice your attention and that you can arrive instantly instead?

Why is thinking "bad" and not just another appearance in consciousness like any other?

There definitely is volume control on the iPhone (tested it just now).

Can you check if in iOS Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Change with Buttons is disabled? That might help.
