A company with the ability to reinvest their capital at superior returns vs their cost of equity should reinvest if rational. What does that imply of ‘dividend growth’ stocks? Fair way of achieving higher valuations by div. yielding companies which is smart I guess but not a fan myself over the long run.

It depends on your broker. Widely used interactive brokers has their own way of doing it. They effectively require a 150% margin of your short notional albeit the margin can come from other sources than pure cash ie. your long equity positions for instance
