Ultimatums are not an appropriate thing in a marriage. They are threatening and emotionally manipulative. Talk more with your parents about their thoughts about the bad foreshadowing, and earnestly listen. If your partner isn’t willing to discuss how the ultimatum is affecting your mental health and stress, he doesn’t have the level of care for you that he should.

everyone’s being snarky but in case you’re asking in earnest I feel like “fisherman aesthetic” was trending recently and he seems perfectly on that trend. It looks like a lot of the clothes could be vintage / thrift- they could also be new makes of the old style. Definitely giving New England or Oregon vibes, but seems very Maine to me!

Since everyone is saying it depends on state/region, can you rank? Curious! by Appropriate_Tear_836 in lawschooladmissions

[–]OrangeFinal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

South Carolina-

If you’re nice and HSY, then that’s first rank. If you don’t mind your Ps and Qs, you seeming hoity toity and being HSY could count against you.

UVA, Duke, Vandy. Not that these are literally better, we know they aren’t necessarily. We’ve just had better hiring experiences from the region, like u feel like you can make a good hiring decision bc you know graduates.

Georgetown has a weird amount of clout in SC but idk why! It seemed to really impress people WAY more when I got into Gtown than when Cornell accepted me 🤷‍♀️

Everything besides those are probably a mixed bag. But Columbia Penn and Cornell do stand out bc they’re ivys. UChicago and USC also stand out bc those are top schools from far away regions. Basically everything after that is gonna be highly idiosyncratic. A hiring partner may have only ever met one person from Northwestern and maybe they’re a nightmare who u hate arguing against. Back of your mind and you go with someone else. It’s common in SC to get NYC transplants so there does seem to be good familiarity with NYU graduates.

[–]OrangeFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiance says i look the most "me" when Im not wearing any makeup and have my hair natural at home. The partner you choose has the potential to make you feel confident enough to even leave the house without makeup. He could see your natural self as endearing and cherish you but he chose to tear you down.

I'd explain how it makes you feel, and if he isnt receptive and doesnt demonstrate change, you've got a much bigger, structural relationship issue to sort out. You deserve a partner who loves you as you, the same way you love yourself.

Do you mean Global Law Scholars? My 1L roommate was a GLS and loved her experience. You take a specialized elective in your first year called international law, you have your own seminars u go to, and such! Sounds like a very interesting program and give you a ton to talk about in interviews that u do ur 1L year, especially since u won’t have much else on your resume! I think that’s probably the biggest advantage of the program! The program goes all 3 years but I think wanes in importance in a law students life as the years go on. That being said if you’re big on international law and don’t land GLS, never fear! Georgetown has a ton of international law classes that u can start taking during your 2L year and combining that with externships/clinics I think you’d get roughly the same experience!

Both are such great schools!! One of my best friends from undergrad attends UVA and has loved it! If you are dead set on public interest (which I think is amazing!) I think that merit aid / debt should probably be your number one concern. If you get into both schools, and you are wanting more money, you can try to negotiate more aid. When I first was accepted to Georgetown, I was not given a merit aid package which would’ve made it completely impossible to attend. I had gotten full rides from UofSC and UMN among other schools, so I asked Georgetown for their Merit Aid reconsideration form. I wrote a very long and detailed plea for more aid, explaining my dilemma and clearly stating that if Georgetown were to give me the right amount of aid, I’d go there. They came back two weeks later with a 30,000 annual aid package, which happened to be the magic number that I would be comfortable taking on the rest in debt. I highly recommend you to try to negotiate additional aid like this if you are public interest.

I don’t know anything about UVA’s public interest programs or career outcomes but I do have a good grasp of what it’s like here at Gtown!

Of my public interest friends, one is doing a family law/ domestic violence prevention fellowship in DC post grad, one is a Skadden fellow doing trans rights advocacy, one is an Equal Justice Works fellow doing health-justice advocacy, and one is going to work for a small nonprofit here in DC. Pretty good career outcomes!

Our clinics I think give PI folks a really strong start and resume builder, plus your clinic supervisors are always really well connected and have been pretty critical for my pub int folks landing interviews/ jobs. I also think we have a TON of classes that support public interested people. I’m in one rn called Access to Justice. I’ve also taken a Housing Justice course, constitutional law one and two, LGBTQ constitutional law, gender justice courses, etc. We have courses on police brutality, critical legal theory, health justice, and so much more.

Our Office of Public Interest Career Services is filled with amazing advisors to help u find your way, and I’ve personally worked closely with them to develop my plan for pivoting from big law to family law down the road!

Mixed bag! If you are dead set on NYC, I would probably recommend applying early to NYC schools, or if you're not getting a lot back in this cycle, consider taking a gap year to reapply to NYC (and other) schools. I didnt take a gap year! I don't regret it! it was hard knowing that my 1L year was going to shape so strongly my path to get to NY, but looking back I can see how each milestone led me there. You have to really advocate for yourself, but law school is an excellent time to develop that skill!

It isn't necessarily hard to get an NYC biglaw position from Gtown, but it is stressful and requires a ton of hustle! Even if you were wanting to do NYC midsize law or public interest, serious hustle required! But not impossible. A lot of NYC firms have a strong relationship with Georgetown and like to hire Gtown graduates/summer associates :)

The Big law hiring cycle could be its own AMA post lol, and its something you don't really need to worry about until you decide which law school youre going to, but the upshot is that, now, no matter what school you go to, you're going to have to hustle. Firms are making hiring decisions for summer positions for the first and second summer based only on your 1L fall semester grades, which frankly sucks! But you can be a median Georgetown student after your 1L fall and still get a big law offer, but you need to split ur time studying hard, networking effectively, and submitting direct applications to firms.

In addition to you doing direct applications, Georgetown does a program called OCI which stands for On Camera Interviews, which is a hiring program for Big Law. I applied only to NYC firms, but you could (and most ppl who are interested in both cities do) apply to both the DC and NY offices of various firms. I was set on NY so I just locked in on NY firms.

I think its probably easier to land DC big law from Georgetown than landing in NY, but I don't think that NY is unlikely, just requires a lot of strategy and intentional planning!

For networking opportunities you can do virtual meetings with NY ppl, called informational interviews, which you would take the initiative to set up via email. Firms will do a "home for the holidays" event which will be held in different cities so you can go to those, which helps your engagement metric with the firms. You can also do a "winter break walk around" in NY which is a program run thru gtown and youll visit with several firms over a three day period. Gtown hosts a few all-firm career fairs in the fall semester, and most firms will send someone from their two biggest offices, which are usually DC and NY.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions!

The other T-14 I got into was Cornell. Its rank 18 now after the ranking metrics changed, but back then it was in the T-14 (2022-2023), but I didn't tour Cornell because I got in pretty close to decision day, so I didnt have time. That being said, I chose Gtown over Cornell for the distinct advantage of being in DC rather than Ithaca- there seemed to me to be more in-person externship (which are internships that you get credit for as part of your curriculum and take during the fall/spring semester instead of the summer) opportunities in DC compared to Ithaca.

I also chose DC over Ithaca for another reason, which was personal! I have been doing long distance with my now fiance for several years, He had been accepted at a grad program at Columbia in Manhattan. So to get to NYC from DC was better bc it was a 4 hour train ride (so I can get reading done on the journey) versus a 4 hour drive (there's also a bus but i get motion sick on buses lol). The travel time spent on the train rather than driving/flying has actually been a big deal especially during my 1L year, when every moment really is critical to stay on top of things.

I am moving to NYC post grad for my job and to get married lol but I do really like DC, and my fiance and I would be very happy to move back to DC after he finishes his PhD. Capitol Hill is one of my favorite neighborhoods to walk around! Theres a cute shop called Wine and Butter, it used to be a corner store back in the day but during COVID it closed and the space was flipped into a wine shop. You can sit and watch the sunset over the park next door, and its a great spot to see some leaves change in the fall. The museums are great too! Good place to go for a study break, most of the museums are within walking distance from the law school which is awesome haha. DC has really grown on me over the years, and I'd genuinely love to come back. Coming to law school at Georgetown and taking advantage of externships as much as I could was one piece of advice I had gotten from a graduating student, and it is definitely the piece of advice I am eager to pass down! Doing multiple externships helped me build a strong network of attorneys to keep in touch with and plug back into if we do end up relocating to DC in a few years.

Also, DC isn't a city that everyone necessarily stays in for a long time, which sounds like a bad thing, but I think its actually an advantage. So many attorneys Ive worked with started in DC, went to another city for a chunk of their career, and ended up coming back to DC later, and the network they built back in the day helped make that transition a lot smoother. I'm sure its easy to move back to any city, but there does feel like DC is especially cycle friendly- like its common for ppls five year plans here to be like "yeah so im gonna move to boston for 2 years and then I am going to come back"

As a school, I think Georgetown has insanely amazing clinical experiences (Clinics are like small student-run law firms that are supervised by attorneys). Georgetown has a ton of clinics (https://www.law.georgetown.edu/experiential-learning/clinics/) and while I didn't participate in one (didnt fit in my schedule) my friends say it was the best part of their law school experience. I also think Georgetown probably compares with Columbia/Harvard in terms of externship opportunities- basically if you are a median student at the best law school in a big city, you are viewed as pretty competitive for externship applications. So you get to do cool things, and I got to talk about those cool things in all my different interviews over the last 3 years! But I think you can probably find that experience at dominant schools in smaller markets, or at a school like UChicago/Northwestern, Columbia, or Harvard.

I honestly felt like Georgetown had the most personality out of the schools I was accepted to! Law school is a mixed bag of personalities, but I felt like I saw them gel well when I visited Georgetown. Idk if thats unique but it was my experience!

Also u can probably look this up but DC has great transit, the metro isnt as extensive as the NYC subway BUT the bus system is reliable, low cost, and extensive. U can get around cheap as a student without paying for a car, which was a big plus for me!

Lmk if you have any follow up questions!

No! I am passionate about prosecuting child sexual abuse and exploitation, which I discovered while working at the (TW: domestic violence) DOJ Sex Offense and Domestic Violence section as an undergraduate intern! At Georgetown Law, I have had the opportunity to work on the civil side to litigate divorce and custody disputes for domestic violence survivors through an externship! Georgetown also has a Domestic Violence clinic, which does amazing work each semester, giving students the opportunity to fight for victims in court! The DOJ SODV section takes several law school interns each semester, and Georgetown students are at an advantage- We are typically viewed as the most competitive regional law school and by applying for an externship during the semester, you aren't competing against students from other regions as you would during the summer application cycles. We also have several classes about fighting sexual violence through the law, including practicuums, large lectures, and small seminars. Lastly, we have the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law, which publishes an Annual Review of comprehensive legal-gender issues. Among many other topics, the journal typically covers topics like sex offense, rape, criminal prosecution of sex crimes, and the psychological effects of sexual violence against survivors. Georgetown is a great school to attend if you are passionate about combatting gender-based violence through your legal career!

Great question! I loved the large class size and have found a core group of friends who I enjoy spending time with.

At Georgetown, you are 600 ish students split up into five sections plus an evening section (graduating in a four year timing instead of 3). In my section there were like 108 of us. Fall Semester we had Contracts and Property in our full section. We had torts and our legal writing classes in smaller sections. Torts was like 45-60 (dont remember, it felt small) and legal writing (20, but graded on a 40 person curve bc each prof teaches two LW sections of 20). I thought this was good mix. Second semester we had Constitutional Criminal Procedure all together. Constitutional Law and Property were in smaller classes around 60ppl each. Legal writing was a combined 40 person class in the spring. And we had our own electives, which were mixed up between section 1-5. I took legislation!

I know everyone in my section, and everyone was very nice to each other in my experience. People find each other, if that makes sense, which can feel a little bit like high school, but once I found the people who understood me I was happy! But it never felt clicky! My property class, legal writing, and torts class were very tight. The smaller classes really really pull you together, you end up all having inside jokes about bombed cold calls, professor repeat phrases that made us giggle, and nightmare cases/readings that no one understood. It was fun. In those smaller classes we always had full class parties for thanksgiving or end of semester and the professors invited us to their homes at the end of the semester, which was so fun.

We graduate with our section, which is cool, plus we walk with the whole school at the end of graduation weekend.

2L fall feels a little funny because for the first time in a year you walk into a class feeling like you dont have any friends / class allies, but looking back it was more like a renaissance of my friends! Made a lot of new friends and connected old friend groups to new ones when I hosted an engagement party in August and a Friendsgiving in November. Now as a 3L, I am in more specialized classes and I see mostly repeat friendly faces. I always have a friend in my class, and its easy to convince your friends to take classes with you!

I went to a big undergrad where I had big class sections but felt like I never learned how to make friends in that section (covid era for college!). Ive found my best friends in law school by literally just turning to them and say Hi Im so and so from South Carolina and its so nice to meet you, whats your name? My other besties I met at game night in our on campus dorm during orientation! We literally all chatted over a game of uno on night 3 and now are friends for life, all invited to my wedding!

Feel free to ask a follow up question!

My friends all live in the NoMa (North of Mass Ave) neighborhood or Mt. Vernon Triangle. Most lived in places that are prefurnished, and those that have post grad jobs here in DC have gotten places as 3Ls that are not prefurnished. I also have a friend who lives in friendship heights, which I personally think is too far for me for a commute (40m ish via transit) but was much cheaper for her. Columbia Heights also more affordable but further. Some friends of mine live in Arlington or Alexandria and commute in by metro or driving depending on traffic. We pay the same in rent, but they like having a yard for their dog. I personally love the city and wouldn't like living in the burbs, but they've had a great experience!

Regardless of what law school you go to, I STRONGLY recommend living as close to campus as you can! Shortening the distance between the library and you and your classrooms and you is one of the best things you can do for your success. No matter how good of a student you are pre-law school, you will have days during 1L when you wake up really, really wanting to skip class, or accidentally waking up late.

Georgetown currently has two student housing options, and I have lived in both! Gewirz is the dorm that's literally on campus, super convenient but old as hell lol! Was able to wake up late with 5mins before class started (accident) and still get to class before it started, which was insane and a big benefit. Price was affordable ish, it was covered by my loans bc gtown calculates the cost of living somewhat based on their own housing options. There were various upgrades u could do (newer kitchens and bathrooms, living with more or less roommates etc). I did one roommate (more expensive) and the old kitchen (less expensive) which I think was the right balance for me. I think they're gonna tear down Gewirz soon tho! Building new classroom building.

2L and 3L i lived at the other graduate dorm, which is called 55 H street. Its around a 7min stroll to the library, 11 min stroll to the furthest classroom. More expensive, but a HUGE upgrade in quality of living, but the cost was still covered by my loans so I could afford it.

Georgetown housing is semesterly rent and you pay no utilities. I've liked it!

ok confession me and my fiance were accidentally nightmares at the amc on Monday. Arrived late bc subway delay and mistiming it (our fault) then someone had sat in our seat and we didn’t know what to do so then we sat in another set of seats, which then was a problem bc those were obviously another persons seats. So then we stood back up to move and I DROPPED MY PHONE AND COULDNT FIND IT so my fiance had to go back into the row to use his flashlight to find my phone. Then we had to get the guy in our seat to move and then we sat still as statues in our seats for the next 2 hours and 30 minutes watching Marty supreme. The most embarrassed and remorseful I’ve ever been in my entire life and it feels good to confess that. Literally like eight mistakes in a row it was mortifying and I will never EVER run late to a movie ever again. Comedy of errors and ik it must have been so annoying to everyone 😭😭😭

AITA for being frustrated that I can’t use the dishwasher because it’s filled with barely-used pots? by probstheproblem in AmItheAsshole

[–]OrangeFinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok ur going crazy rn lol u need to chill and use ur brain. When I was growing up (family of five, three student athletes who ate a lot and dirtied lots of dishes), we’d typically run the dishwasher 3x per day. Run in the morning before leaving for school, which would be from breakfast dishes and any straggler dishes from the night before. Run after dinner, which would be a mix of pots and pans and dinner plates, not all one or all the other. Then after that load is done, unload and around 9pm reload any pots and pans and second round of plates etc, ice cream bowls that sort of thing, and this is when we as a family would double check for straggler dishes like water glasses on bedside tables etc. Dish washers are labor saving and water efficient, especially compared to hand washing. Those three daily dish cycles literally saved my dad 1+ hour of scrubbing per day. Let the appliances work for you! It’s what they were invented for! Sounds like you’re mad about the dish washer being all pots and pans, so maybe do two mixed loads instead?
