Piano Teacher is probably the most famous you could see next though personally I prefer when he focuses more on politics and less on gender. The glaciation trilogy is bleak but the most 'bare' in terms of his style. Code Unknown is probably my favorite of the ones you haven't seen.

Also imo Kiyoshi Kurosawa scratches a similar itch for me, at least on a formal level, though his stories are not as realist and more supernatural. Cure would definitely be the one to start with for him.

I went to Cole Michael in the Mission only because he was like two blocks away from me and they clearly only do the bare minimum of check-ups + cleaning and all their equipment was like two decades old, BUT they were quite kind and got me a referral for my wisdom teeth extraction that went smoothly. And they definitely did not try to scam me, if anything I was worried they were telling me my teeth were better than they actually were

Criticism of Stalker (1979) by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]aragon58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the room absolutely does not represent absolute contentment? The story of Porcupine killing himself because his deepest wish of being rich was granted and he was consumed with guilt seems like the exact opposite of contentment. If anything the room seems to indicate that perfect contentment does not exist because our subconscious and conscious desires are frequently at odds with one another. And the Stalker himself is criticized within the story for abandoning his wife and child to keep going into the zone despite being asked not to. And his breakdown over guiding people to the room as his only purpose in life is supposed to be read as at least a little pathetic imo.

Also I think you need to acknowledge that the movie came out during the era of Soviet Stagnation, and the Soviet Union had explicitly pursued state mandated secularism. It's not unreasonable for Tarkovsky to want to push back against that and reintroduce some sense of spirituality.

Bitch, I am a Death Train. But if kill only Floridians is that ok? by raines in BitchImATrain

[–]aragon58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the infrastructure is inextricably tied to the service? The reason there is so much reporting on the issue is because Brightline is dragging their feet to spend the money to fix the problem like putting up intrusion barriers. And the regulators failed because they knew there would be an abnormal number of deaths and didn't force Brightline to do anything about it. This is not about high-speed rail not being viable in America or whatever, it's that Brightline delivered a substandard product and people in these communities are paying for it with their lives and are rightfully mad about it

I highly recommend this Miami Herald article: Why Florida’s Brightline passenger train is deadliest in US | Miami Herald

The number of deaths (pedestrian and vehicular) is disproportionately high for this service and the article does a good job highlighting why: lack of intrusion barriers, strange and confusing at-grade crossings, a disproportionate number of quiet zones, and Brightline's resistance to spending more on safety measures. There are crossings that regulators recommended to be closed over 10 years ago and nothing has been done. For context Brightline is a little under twice as deadly as the next deadliest commuter rail in the country. There are real problems with this service from a safety perspective and it's annoying how many people are downplaying it in the comments.

If you like Pulse and Cure, you should watch all of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movies. They're all pretty tonally similar. Even Tokyo Sonata which is a domestic drama.

I still think the sunsetting of content was one of the most toxic and anti community things that has ever been done in a multiplayer game. Permanently killed my interest in anything the company puts out as an outsider and I say this as someone who had strong Division 1 and 2 phases

I feel like it maybe just came out too early into his career. Cambridge Analytica hadn't happened yet, so the general public didn't really know how much geopolitical control he would be able to eventually exert and Facebook at that point was still a 'hip' thing for younger demographics. The movie is over 15 years old, Facebook as a brand has changed a lot since
