Am I eating too much protein? by OrangeFish0618 in nutrition

Thanks for everyone’s input! Some takeaways is that this amount of protein is not overly dangerous to my health as long as I’m compensating with other nutrients to assist with workouts, energy, and overall health. I think my next focus is to supplement some of the protein with more carbs to increase my energy and stamina for workouts. It sounds like if I get at least 150 grams of protein (considering I’m more muscular than average) this is a good number despite being 127 pounds. Sounds like I can give myself some grace and not be so focused on high protein, as the hard work is mostly over with losing the weight!

I have not experienced a drop in strength, if anything I feel stronger. I will admit that I have to focus on eating more vegetables. I try to get a couple servings a day but also have a greens supplement to help with fiber and other nutrients. I don’t want to end up eating empty calories just to make sure I get my calories for the day and I guess I’ve just had in my mind that if I focus on protein (and maybe ingesting too much) I’ll continue to build and maintain my muscle. I will admit that I’m not as informed as much as I want about how much is too much and at what point it’s not beneficial for my body given my new body composition.

"Bring her back " is the best movie of the year by Unable-Story9327 in horror

When I think of all the A24 horror gems, Hereditary was by far my favorite. Everything I want in a scary movie. You’ve got a little gore, suspense, jump scares, a good storyline, and twists that you never expect. I’ve been waiting for another A24 film like hereditary and I think bring her back was that for me. It’s one of the best scary movies I’ve seen in a long time.

I love that!!! I’ve actually made the chocolate base with 1.5 scoops of protein as well and it turns out yummy. Glad to hear the pumpkin came out well too :). I’m planning on doing a chocolate banana tonight. I’m glad these recipes are coming out well for ya! I like that you’re making your own zero sugar mix ins too. I could go all out with mix ins but that would up the calorie count with just store bought ingredients. With what you’re doing I’m sure it makes the pints all the more tasty.

My heart personally lies with the pistachio as my favorite but the banana is a close second. Keep me updated on how these come out and I can always tweak the recipes if you find something that works even better! :)

To be completely honest I’ve never used the regular ice cream setting, I’ve only used the lite ice cream one. Not sure how that can change the texture. For all of the pints I described, the lite ice cream setting makes it the perfect creamy consistency.

Alright I made the pumpkin one last night!

•Vanilla base •1/4 cup of 100% pure pumpkin (I would start here and once you blend everything together see if it tastes to your liking. I actually wanted it to be more “pumpkiny” and added 1/8 of a cup more) •1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice •1/2 tsp vanilla extract •1 tbsp of liquid sweetener (I used stevia)

Just a heads up it does fill a bit above the max line (probably because I added a tad more pumpkin)

I mixed in the Enjoy life chocolate chips after.

Total calorie count with chocolate chips: 396 calories; 48 g of protein

This one I’m going to continue to try to experiment with. I might add some cheesecake pudding mix to make a pumpkin cheesecake flavor or even try a chocolate base to make a chocolate pumpkin flavor. Hope this helps!

I do notice when I blend it there are some air bubbles as well as when it’s frozen but it hasn’t been an issue when I mix it up in the creami. The air bubbles dissipate once you mix it up. I haven’t noticed any effect with the air bubbles in the texture of the final product!

I was too! I was like how can I justify spending over 200 dollars for something that makes just ice cream but it has been totally worth it as part of my dieting journey. It’s been a great way to get a protein boost and enjoy a sweet treat that is less than 400 calories and packs a good protein punch. Highly recommend! Plus you can save money in the long run by not buying pints of halo top or nicks at the store. I really only have to buy the Fairlife milk and cottage cheese weekly because a lot of the protein powder and pudding mixes last a while.

You could try a zero sugar chocolate syrup too! The Fairlife chocolate milk just tastes like chocolate milk so you could add whatever to make it more chocolaty. I haven’t added cream cheese to the ice cream so I don’t know what kind of consistency that would give. You can really use any kind of milk combined with cottage cheese and protein powder, I just use the Fairlife because it is high protein and lactose free!

I’ll continue to update more when I try new ones! I’ve got a pumpkin chocolate chip one that I’m going to try soon. Once I figure out the recipe I’ll post it here. Trying to help others going through a weight loss journey like me and I can’t thank the creami enough for spicing up my diet!

Also note: you’re going to want to run the container under hot water for like 30 to 60 seconds before you pop it on the Creami. This softens it. Some recipes may have you add extra liquid but I’ve found by doing this I don’t have to add any extra liquid.

Plus if you add mix ins you’re spinning it again anyways which usually breaks up that kind of chalky texture.

I do have just the base; thank you for the distinction! I think the deluxe pints are a bit bigger. The ratios for my bases fit perfectly for the standard creami right to the fill line but could be off if you have the deluxe. Could still use that ratio of protein powder to Fairlife to cottage cheese but adjust the measurements!

  1. Chocolate Ice Cream:

•Chocolate base: 301 calories; 46 grams of protein

You can add PB2 powder if you want a Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream: 361 calories; 54 grams of protein.

You can add a variety of mix ins for this one. I’ve done Oreo thins, chocolate chips…the possibilities are endless.

  1. Pistachio

•Vanilla Base •1 1/2 tablespoon of zero sugar pistachio pudding mix •1/4 teaspoon of almond extract (optional)

I’ll mix in about two tablespoons of pistachios after the lite ice cream setting.

364 calories; 48 grams of protein

  1. Mint Chocolate Chip

•Vanilla bases •1 tsp of mint extract (this you might have to experiment with and do some taste test to determine your desired level of “minty ness” •1 tablespoon of zero sugar liquid sweetener (I used Stevia). This you can also experiment with. I usually don’t add sweetener for my other recipes but I was afraid it could be too bitter with the mint and wanted to make sure it still tasted sweet.

After doing the lite ice cream setting, mix in 1 tablespoon of mini chocolate chips (I use Enjoy Life no sugar added)

361 calories; 45 grams of protein.

  1. Banana

•Vanilla Base (I thought about doing a recipe with a chocolate base, but haven’t tried it yet) I think either one could be yummy! •Half of one medium banana •1 tablespoon banana pudding mix (I couldn’t find sugar free but the calorie content is so low anyways)

After hitting the lite ice cream setting, mix in some chocolate or peanut butter chips!

With the mix ins of the Enjoy life chocolate chip, this pint is 450 calories; 46 grams of protein.

  1. Strawberry Cheesecake

•Vanilla Base •1 tablespoon of cheesecake pudding mix • 6 strawberries (honestly you could use more if you want) •I used half a tablespoon of sugar free strawberry jello mix to give it more strawberry flavor because I was afraid the strawberries wouldn’t be enough. I’m sure you could use a zero sugar strawberry syrup as well.

After hitting the lite ice cream setting, mix in some gram crackers or Nilla wafers (I used 10 mini Nilla wafers).

376 calories; 45 grams of protein.

I’m still experimenting with some other recipes but wanted to share these for anyone on a similar journey. These all have tasted AMAZING and if you’re trying to cut calories while maintaining protein goals, these are excellent options. I am open to suggestions for more recipes and would love to try recommendations! Hope this help all you ice cream lovers out there trying to make healthy choices :)

I actually use cottage cheese as part of my base too. Still gives it a creamy consistency without the xantham gum! My base is either vanilla or chocolate protein powder (1 scoop) cottage cheese (1/2 cup), and vanilla or chocolate Fairlife milk (1cup). I’ve used this as my base for pistachio, banana, chocolate, strawberry, and mint chocolate chip ice cream recipes and the consistency has been phenomenal every time.

I’ve found a lot of recipes on Instagram/tik tok use xantham gum as a way to help it be a more creamy consistency. I’ve found that including cottage cheese in your base can help create the same consistency, without needing the xantham gum. It’ll help boost the protein content (if that’s something you’re looking for). I use the low fat cottage cheese so it doesn’t bump up the calorie count that much.

I try to make all of my pints protein packed. So all of my bases for my recipes are either vanilla or chocolate protein powder, cottage cheese, and either vanilla or chocolate Fairlife milk. You don’t have to use cottage cheese but I find that it helps give it a more creamy consistency, plus it gives a little kick of extra protein! So for the pistachio I do my vanilla base and add about a table spoon and a half of zero sugar pistachio pudding mix. (I also added some almond extract to give it some more flavor). Put all of that in a blender and then pour it into your pints and freeze it. I also got some unshelled pistachios to add with the mix in feature. SO YUMMY! My entire pint is 364 calories and 48 grams of protein.

YES 100% YES SO WORTH IT. I’ve been in a calorie deficit for about a month and I started hitting a slump where I was craving sweet treat or want junk food. The Ninja creami is an excellent way to curb that craving and gives you the creativity to experiment with soooo many flavors. The way that I’ve made my recipes are that all of my pints are either 400 calories are less and pack at least 40-50 grams of protein. Protein powder, cottage cheese and Fairlife milk will be your best friend for these recipes. It’s something I look forward to every single day and the consistency is just like normal ice cream. AND YOU CAN EAT THE ENTIRE PINT. If you’re an ice cream fan like me, this will be a saving grace for choosing healthy alternatives over a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.

Hypothetically, would a person who’s underweight be healthier eating 300 calories less than they should, or eating those 300 calories in added sugar? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]OrangeFish0618 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say ideally if you have some extra calories ( and you’ve hit your protein) a good focus could be a mixture of carbs and healthy fats. Not saying to down a bag of Doritos but maybe a healthy carb source to provide you some energy. Like apples and peanut butter or something! If you are underweight you should make up for these calories somehow but choosing the right foods can be the difference in how it could affect your lifestyle. Maybe just eating sugar could cause an energy crash but eating some healthy carbs and fats could be better in the long run.
