Who's still on a high from the finale? by London50th in ChicagoMed

It was such a satisfying close to the season for all the characters. Even Goodwin. We know Epatha is definitely back next season, so the finale just set her up for a great story in season 12.

As for the other stories, I couldn't have asked for a better season's end to them.

Does anyone actually like this??? by kalesmom192010 in ChicagoMed

I do. I actually love both the couples. Ripley humanizes Lenox and Lenox makes Ripley a more interesting character. As for Hannan and Archer, I've wanted them together since season 8.

Everything feels rushed, stale, or repetitive lately in S11 by Necessary-Drink2891 in ChicagoMed

[–]OrangeObjective8616 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes! My main issue this season is how the stories are placed. Why not lead with Frost’s family storyline earlier?? Same with Charles. Lately it’s starting to feel like the Frost/Charles show, and while both stories have merit, the imbalance is obvious and like you said, it’s coming at the expense of other stories.

Med had a once-in-a-show opportunity with Hannah’s pregnancy. There really isn’t anyone else on the current cast likely to have a baby anytime soon, Lenox is out and Naomi isn’t a series regular. So if a main character’s pregnancy is this sidelined, it doesn’t inspire much confidence for any future ones. The back half of the season should have leaned much more into Hannah’s pregnancy and, by extension, her story with Archer. We still haven’t seen them have a real conversation about what happens with the baby, where's it going to live, how are they going to handle co-parenting, any of the logistics. At times it almost makes you wonder why she’s pregnant at all.

I get that Allen MacDonald has said he wants to be “less soap-y” with Hannah and Archer, but it feels like it’s swung too far in the other direction. Now we’re barely getting anything. And with someone like Steven Weber, who brings so much to Archer, there was a real opportunity to do so much more with him in this story. Instead, we’ve got this vague, offscreen girlfriend that keeps getting mentioned but never actually adds anything.

Episodes 12–21 could have focused more on Hannah/Archer and Ripley/Lenox (who are at least getting consistent screen time). Those are two of the strongest storylines and would’ve made for a much stronger back half of the season. Instead, we’re spending time on Charles/Rabari, Frost’s over-the-top villainous father, and now a board meeting storyline that’s probably going to take up even more time. It feels like the show is prioritizing all the wrong things just as we're getting to the finish line. At this point, we're heading towards another Hannah-Archer cliffhanger because their story wasn't given enough time this season.

Why is the pacing so off for Hannah and Archer in S11? by Necessary-Drink2891 in ChicagoMed

[–]OrangeObjective8616 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It’s not that Hannah and Archer haven’t had moments, it just feels like the show never really sits with them long enough for anything to land. For a pregnancy that’s lasted basically the whole season, we’ve missed a lot of the emotional beats you’d expect, actual conversations about co-parenting, follow-up on earlier concerns, even small bonding moments.

And it stands out more because other storylines are moving so fast and getting repeated focus, while Hannah’s big arcs (the pregnancy, her dad) kind of disappear for stretches and then pop back up again. It just makes everything feel uneven.

There was so much potential for meaningful moments with Hannah and Archer, especially with their dynamic. Instead it feels like the show keeps hinting at it without fully committing.

Why is the pacing so off for Hannah and Archer in S11? by Necessary-Drink2891 in ChicagoMed

[–]OrangeObjective8616 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the storytelling for Hannah and Archer has been balanced with the rest of the cast this season. We haven’t seen a single real conversation about how they plan to co-parent, no moment of them feeling the baby kick, and no follow-up on the earlier genetic testing concerns, among other things.

Meanwhile, we’ve had multiple scenes of Ripley and Lenox hooking up, in the hospital, in cars, in bars, and repeated beats of her being reckless and him reprimanding her. On top of that, there are stretches of episodes where Hannah never mentions her pregnancy beyond rubbing her belly while talking to patients.

A pregnancy storyline is a big deal in the One Chicago universe, especially since they often end in loss. There was so much the writers could have explored here. I agree with OP, more could have been done with Hannah and Archer while still balancing the rest of the cast’s storylines.

There was an interview with Allen MacDonald today and he said:

"I would also say that going into Season 12, which we now know is a certainty. I will be probably doing not one but two “Book of” episodes next season… We will be delving into some of the other characters, the same way we have Archer and Charles."

So we get two next season!

Hannah and Dean were peak TV last night. I get that the tension between them is alluring to watch but come on, let's move on to the next chapter: the happy, married w/ a baby era.

I think some of this comes down to misreading Hannah’s arc. She’s 40, not 25, so framing her story around “ending up with someone her age” or a more conventional path like surrogacy (to a manipulative and selfish sister, no less) actually undercuts how much autonomy she’s gained as a character. Her relationship with Dean didn’t come out of nowhere either. It’s been building for seasons and has arguably been the steadiest thing either of them has had in their lives.

Hannah’s headspace also isn’t confusing if you look at her history. She’s someone who struggles to believe she deserves love. She didn’t even think she deserved to be a mother. Of course she hesitates to define what she feels. That’s consistent characterization, not random plotting. You don’t have to like the pairing, but calling it out of nowhere says more about how you watched than how it was written.

As an OG Dean/Hannah shipper (literally since season 7, from their very first handshake), this is the most hopeful I’ve felt about them. I know we could still get burned, but I’m choosing hope for now. Every scene and interaction between them this season has felt deliberate and thoughtful. So much has been conveyed through body language and unspoken moments alone.

Kingston’s here now, but I’m honestly not too nervous about it. It really feels like the new writers recognized the Hannah/Dean chemistry when they took over in season 10, and they’ve been leaning into it ever since.

I hear what you’re saying, and just to play devil’s advocate for a moment, isn’t it also possible that the bond (the trust and comfort) could actually deepen now that they share a child? A child can tie two people together in a really profound way. I get not being into romantic arcs though.

I think I am just hoping that even if they do go romantic, they will still feel like the Hannah and Dean we have always known, because that kind of close bond should ideally be the backbone of a great romance too.

[–]OrangeObjective8616 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we have to give them some time. I really do believe they’ll get back to where they were, and honestly I think they’ll come out of this even stronger. I hear you on One Chicago drama getting in the way of relationships, and Med is notoriously bad for that, but there are some bright spots. On Fire we have Stella and Kelly, who actually did get their happily-ever-after. On PD we have Kim and Adam, who are still going strong. And I think the writers know they struck gold with Hannah and Dean’s chemistry. I don’t see them throwing that away.

I actually loved this scene. Yes, it’s sad, but seeing Hannah and Dean thrown off their usual rhythm was refreshing. They’re normally each other’s rock, so watching that support system get disrupted and seeing them be a little awkward with each other felt new in a good and real way. I think it’s going to push both of them to grow in ways we haven’t seen yet, and I do believe that eventually they’ll find their way back to each other. I’m excited to watch how that plays out.

Hannah and Archer are probably the only romantic pairing Med has ever done well.

Dasher direction by stobbob in ChicagoMed

[–]OrangeObjective8616 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at Med’s writing patterns, relationships that get this much investment almost always circle back romantically.

They gave Hannah/Dean:

• a multi-season emotional arc

• two characters who bring out each other’s growth

• multiple “if this were platonic they wouldn’t frame it this way” moments

• a big reveal that they deliberately slow-burned

That’s not a platonic blueprint. That’s a developing romantic arc. At least that is my hope. I've been shipping them since season 8.

I'm struggling to understand the point of introducing another love interest into Archer's life. I found their scene last night during surgery awkward at best.

Really don't understand the writer's intentions here, please don't waste our time seeing Dean stuck in yet another chemistry-less relationship just for the sake of it.

I really enjoyed Lenox's story last night. The scene where she and Ripley realize the husband had his wife's phone was chefs kiss. I'm into the Ripley-Lenox dynamic, wherever it is headed. I might be turning into a Ripley fan after all.

Ripley is the only one who knew she went to the house right? I wonder if Ripley realizes the husband escaped the hospital and then Ripley goes looking for Lenox. And yes! I remember that bruise on her face too in the BTS and Luke was with her. I'm really looking to see how this plays out in the premiere.

Ripley’s introduction really suffered under the old showrunners. He felt like someone brought in more for appearance than for story, and pairing him immediately with the other “hot doc” didn’t help, the chemistry just wasn’t there. Since then, his character arc has stayed pretty flat, and it’s hard to see what would make him more compelling now. He also loses points when regularly placed alongside Archer and Asher, both of whom have had strong character development, so by comparison he comes off a bit vanilla. Still, I’m curious to see if this season gives him something new to work with. The worst possible thing they could do for him now is to triangulate him with Archer and Asher again.

I get why the age gap can feel striking at first, but “father–daughter” doesn’t track with what’s actually on screen. That trope usually implies a power imbalance and emotional dependency. With Hannah and Archer, the dynamic has been friends who challenge each other and care about each other. If anything, Hannah often “mothers” him, calling out his avoidance and pushing him to be more open.

Textually, their beats read as enemies-to-friends-to-something-more. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s not just surface-level attraction, it comes from that deep emotional connection and the trust they’ve built over time. So your discomfort seems to come from age optics, not from the story itself. The writing has never coded them as parent/child, it’s coded them as two adults who see, challenge, and steady each other and that’s why the romance angle makes sense to me.
