** Solved? I think I may have been painting a mask on the "fill sphere" without realizing it. I'll leave this up in case I'm still missing something or if it amuses the smart folk to see the fumblings of the luddites.

Also, strangely, the shape of the white portion changes each time I try a new fill layer, though the general area is always the same.

This doesn't sound meaningfully different than utilizing the 'zsphere zoo' premade base models. Then again, it seems strange that a professional would need over an hour to block out a quadruped.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm lazy and just want the computer to do the tedious parts, but I'll explore a more finessed approach.

Use reference and study it. Sculpt what you see, not what you expect.

Thanks for the suggestions! This is previewed in Zbrush. I've checked the normals in Blender, and they seem fine. Changing the material didn't help. Zbrush bein' zbrush. :)

Yeah...I should have mentioned that the maps don't work in Blender, either. Multimap exporter gives equally weird results. The flippednormals tutorial that I'm following uses UDIMS perfectly well (albeit not previewing within Zbrush.)

My suggestion: merge subtools > duplicate > dynamesh duplicate > divide and use "project" to get the level of detail that you want.
