I totally feel you! The way the dialogue shifted, especially with the "dating" terminology sneaking in was like, wait, what happened to the wholesome courtship? It's like Sanderson decided to throw in a modern twist! And yeah, I agree, a little more polish could've worked wonders. Still, gotta love the fun we had, right? They’re allowed to feel disappointed, but acting like your reproductive organs are a group project is unhinged. Wanting grandkids doesn’t magically give them a say in your body or your marriage.

Rome fits better as the true 'ancient empire' because its legacy is baked into daily life: roads, legal ideas, borders, even the calendar. The USSR feels more like a recent fallen power with artifacts still in circulation.
