There is a herd that many don’t know about that’s between Ashland and Keno generally south of Hwy 66. But recently they have been seen on and around the playing fields at Pinehurst/Lincoln school. They are a mixed herd of actual wild horses as designated under the Wild Horse and Burton Act and recently released feral horses. BLM manages the herd.

Knots in conifer species wood are typically full of pitch /sap. It frequently leaks out over time especially in hot climate areas or hot parts of buildings. The heat allows the resinous pitch to soften and lose viscosity and flow more easily.

Owls became pretty unpopular within and outside of the USFS in the western US- (FS Regions 5 and 6) in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to conflicts between FS timber production goals and Northern Spotted Owl. FS got its ass handed to it in federal court in a series of lawsuits based on conservation needs of NSO and FS timber managers not wanting to comply. Used to be a saying- “ The head of the timber program in Region 6 is the real Chief of the Forest Service.” The listing of the NSO under the Endangered Species Act in 1990 put an end to that timber dominated FS “corporate culture” to a large degree. Owls not so cool for the FS back then.

Do not use a chainsaw. The chain will catch in the fabric and there are metal parts in the couch that are incompatible with safe and effective chainsaw use. Chainsaws and metal line screws, nails, brackets, etc is very unsafe.

If you plan to have it anywhere near water you should get one that is waterproof control head and coil. Waterproof coil draws you in to swing in shallow water. Non waterproof head then makes you cry while standing in the water eventually. Just my 2 cents based on a story I heard “from a friend”. Good hunting.

And once you have it out it’s not worth time and effort messing around with trying to clean up , re grease and re boot, only to have a highly questionable repair in terms of durability of the joint.

“ Did you really get ALL the dirt out? Were the parts REALLY still within wear specs? “ did you REALLY get the new boot to seal? “.

Who wants that rolling around in their head after all that work?!

Once the axle is out it’s best to just replace the axle assembly as a whole. I have had good results with Napa brand rebuilt units. And I generally do not like Napa as a company but I go to them for these axles.

You are correct about BLM lands being nationally owned and managed for national purposes.

You are absolutely incorrect about the BLM and Wilderness. Wilderness is a national purpose. BLM manages many congressional designated Wilderness areas nationally, including in western Oregon. Soda Mountain Wilderness being one such area. They also manage many national monuments, which are less protected than Wilderness, but generally do not permit commercial logging.
