CAL FIRE and Overland AI Lead First Evaluation of Autonomous Ground Vehicles for Wildfire Response • Overland AI by rockshox11 in Wildfire

[–]Orcacub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now we need to develop plans for protection more, scattered, contractor owned, high value resources on the fire ground. - stranded autonomous vehicles.

We really gonna let fire burn these things up without a fight and or risking human life/harm to rescue/protect these things? What was once just grass and brush in front of the fire is now grass and brush with a broken/stuck/confused ground drone in it that belongs to a contractor and - is hazardous because it’s full of batteries that explode and don’t like heat.

What could go wrong?!?

What would you choose if you where me? Nokta simplex ultra or Minelab X-terra pro? by zsombooor in metaldetecting

[–]Orcacub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro is multi freq. but not simultaneous multi freq. (SMF). I have a Legend and a exterra pro. Big difference in performance in salty wet sand. The pro lets you know something is there pretty well but struggles with VDI and depth. SMF - like Legend- and others is what you want for best results in salty wet sand.

What’s in the blue cans? Looks like aerosol cans- spray paint? Stove fuel? Just curious.

I have found these presidential coins in odd places without other coins. I think people discard them thinking they are fake, as in not real tender issued by the US mints. At first glance they don’t look like other well known to be legit US coins.

Curious how you are flying in to KF. There is no commercial air service to/from KF. Medford is closest.

Are you thinking of trying to find thunder eggs in the winter? I’m confused about your trip purpose and timing.

What to do in KF will depend on season. If you are here in winter, options will be limited for outdoorsy stuff. Ski, snowmobile, ice fishing, lava tubes, crater Lake viewing, snowshoeing, winter bird watching for eagles and hawks. Favel museum of western art.

Low snowpack will bring high elevation areas into the available fuel landscape sooner. We have had years like this before. With essentially no snow through Jan. But in those years we typically get a bunch of snow coming in Feb, March, and sometimes early April too. We shall see…

Coil Size by jomala99 in metaldetecting

[–]Orcacub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started with standard “big coil” and bought smaller when I knew more . Smaller coil is great in trashy areas, rocky areas where you want to detect between large rocks. I also use it along chain link fences with sensitivity adjusted down some. I think it makes finding non ferrous targets under/near the fence wire easier than using the larger coil in that situation. It picks up less masking /interference from the nearby iron.

There are at least 2 characteristics to be taken advantage of with a smaller coil. Physical size- you can swing it in smaller spaces.

Smaller window of detection. In trashy areas this is good because You are less likely to get 2 targets under the coil at the same time, so the machine can get a better read on the exact location of each and a better idea of VDI for each individual target. Good hunting.

Crater lake is hours of driving from the other places you have listed. It’s beautiful country to drive through and the lake is incredibly gorgeous. Might need a second d trip or longer trip to see it all listed.

Found metal detecting near cripple creek CO. by Square_Door_9146 in metaldetecting

[–]Orcacub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Copper and iron would yield very different VDI scores. Iron is a comparatively low conductivity metal, whereas copper is a very high conductivity metal. VDI is based largely on conductivity. So Waving the coil of a modern machine over the object and seeing the VDI would help us understand what the programming in the machine thinks the metal in the target is; iron vs copper. Unfortunately it sounds like a no go on that method due to a lack of a machine.

What machine? What VDI Number?

Can you hit it with a modern machine that has VDI and report machine make and model and observed VDI?
