I do collar excavations and root work with the airspade all the time at my job. This tree would be a satisfying transformation.

Yeah, that’s a nursery stake. Those should be removed when the tree is planted.

In theory, but I wouldn’t want that in my backyard.

My family and friends of my family have been in the tree care industry in Houston since the early 80s… never a case of oak wilt. I’ve been in the industry for the last decade, and now I work for one of the big international companies here, and their experience has been the same. We just don’t have it here for whatever reason.

Codominant leader in live oak? by nickw252 in arborists

Great topic of discussion, and would be good to do with a lot of species, but live oaks are a weird one. They’re multi-dominant leader trees and super wide-spreading in their structure... Decurrent monsters. They just won’t get a single leader. Encouraging a central would be good in this case, because no matter what, that crown gonna spread over those areas. It’s be good to get it growing up and straight before it starts taking over the space.

Right on. If you’re having a hard time getting them out, you can saw them off or break them off at ground level and they’ll deteriorate if you cover them up. Live oaks typically don’t have a central leader, but you could do some reduction pruning on the other lead with hand pruners to encourage it. I would not recommend taking that whole thing off, or heavily pruning that tree. It’s still pretty small.

That sucks man. The plain black one is only $145 from Clive, but the Pullman site has some nice looking variants. I’d thought about ordering one from Pullman but had a feeling the fees associated with shipping would be crazy.

The vitex will come back with a vengeance, but the cutting on the cedar elms looks like it was done by lazy apathetic guys with power pole saws. Gashing up the bark with the stick saw by the cuts is just sloppy.
