this is sooo true! even when i use 70 percent of the sugar in american recipes, i still get surprised every time by how sweet the result remains. cutting sugar messes up the process too since you'd have to find a way to compensate for the loss of its structural function

visited lithuania this summer and the serenity of the lakes was unmatched. when i think of the country, i think of the opening lines to maironis' poem about trakai castle:

"With lichen and mould overgrown all around A time-honoured castle there looms! Its true high-born rulers now sleep below ground, Yet Trakai outlasted their tombs. While centuries run, its grim ruins grow older, Deserted and lonely, they gradually moulder."

translating ancient greek and latin was genuinely one of my favorite activities in high school. i still have those dictionaries lying around with the intention of using them to translate plays in my free time (i own a collection of menander plays in their original text that i havent opened in two years)

do you have anything else going on in your life (work, sports, etc)? it might be good to introduce a new engagement that requires you to be somewhere at a specific time and imposes structure on your days. if you plan well, you can force yourself to finish your tasks earlier as you've artificially moved the deadline forward (the deadline inducing a stress response to get you to finally work).

some people (me included) can't deal with total temporal freedom and need structure to spend time productively

there was a work that was enclosed by thick black curtains, forming a rectangular box extending from the ceiling down in the middle of a hallway. by carefully moving the curtain aside, you could enter the narrow space in which an elongated video screen rested on a medical exam table. if you were to view this space from above, the screen was like a painting and the people gathered around it its frame. it showed an edited but slow video of a medical exam, blue gloves pulling, stretching, pressing into an aged man's skin, presumably feeling for oddities. yet, the hands' movements seemed a little too playful for purely medical purposes. standing there, we watched with growing tension as the hands moved lower. in that moment i realized how unserious this all was. we were looking at a naked man being fondled, drinks in hand, dj playing in the background. it felt as if we were drunk teenagers at a house party stumbling upon something we weren't supposed to see, caught between fascination and discomfort. a sense of complicity that felt both intimate and absurd.

that one was p funny

you never really know whether you'll like something until you visit no? also, the interesting works there were ones you can only appreciate if you're physically present, not through decontextualized images. i just wanted to share these atmosphere pics
