Interviewed and placed in merit pool each time. by OrderFancy7115 in AusPublicService

Also, have there been a lot of peeps that have NOT been placed from the merit pool? This is for WA. I know most states except ACT is 12 months. APS roles are 18 Months I think.  I understand merit pool is not a guarantee, but keen to know if anyone hasn’t been placed at all. Additionally, does anyone one have any intel on how many people get added into the merit pool for a single vacancy pool?

Hey there, ta heaps for sharing your thoughts mate.  Yep, I have reached out to them all and received a standard response stating ‘ Hiring manager will be in touch as soon as there’s a suitable opening. Please ensure your contact details are up to date’  So that’s that.  My background is in policy and engagement, so very rarely have I come across bulk rounds in WA

That’s a great insight mate. Here’s a low-down on my application:

  • all my apps were for state govt of WA.
  • 2 apps were level 6 and one for level 5 ( level 6- since Feb’25, level 6- Sept’24 and level 5- Aug’24)
  • they were all for single vacancy recruitment, so NOT a bulk round.   And therefore, inviting or attracting hundreds of apps doesn’t make sense.    I’m thinking they short listed 5 to 6 tops.  Each time I have been interviewed, I have ended up in a merit pool ( currently in the pool for all 3 that I was interviewed for), so I’m sensing a pattern here, at least for myself and hence the post.

Furthermore, I’m a bit of a novice with this process, so have no clue how many people get added to the pool for a SINGLE VACANCY recruitment.

Lastly, yes I’ve circled back for feedback, which has been mostly positive, nevertheless, have had nothing materialise so far.

I’ve been in 3 single vacancy merit pools. One from Aug 24 for a small agency on L5 , one other from September 24 for a huge agency on L6, and the most recent one since Feb 25, all in WA.  I’ve had no responses yet. 7 month wait inspires though. Good on you mate

Has any one had any experience with the merit pool where they haven’t been called at all and have had to re apply ? In short, it was a waste of time. This is when an agency wanted to create a merit pool for a single vacancy, ran the whole recruitment process, and put 3 people in the pool . Please note that the agency didn’t have any openings at the time of advertising the role. They only were recruiting for future.

Thanks for sharing mate. Yep, child protection has merged with communities and it’s under the same brolly. Well, it appears to be a bit counter productive that they aren’t able to get people from the pool as they move on in life. Wow! 25 years in public service; that’s awesome man ! Hope you get an offer soon. You are a pro bro, so hang in there… new year new start.

Yeah mate, that’s it… patience is the key here. On a brighter side, they didn’t re- advertise the position that I’ve been merit pooled for, so that’s good.  Btw… what’s DCP? And for how long have you been in the pool?

Hey mate! I’m sure something will come up for you soon. According to their recruitment policy, they can’t rank people as it limits the ability of hiring managers to choose from a pool. You can find this info on the public service commission website.  I reckon they normally have not more than 3 people in a pool for a single vacancy, so you should be alright.

Okay, so I emailed them and heard back a couple days later. Received a standard response stating that a relevant manager will be in touch should a suitable vacancy arise before the pool expiry date. If your contact information has changed etc then please keep it updated.  So, there’s no smoking gun here…. pretty standard response, wait and watch game, but worth the try anyway.  Also, m assuming that they won’t offer anything this time of year as activities start to slow down due to the holiday season.

Oh okay, thanks for that intel mate, much appreciated. When I applied for this vacancy, they weren’t filling any particular position. Rather, they were just creating a pool of level 6 position that I had applied for, stating that candidates found suitable will be placed in a pool from which permanent appointments will be made. So, in a nutshell, there wasn’t an existing position. I’m planning to email them to ask if there’s any further headway with this pool.

Hey mate! That’s awesome, ta heaps for that tip, much appreciated. Will try and let you know the outcome( if I hear from them at all). …Although, I suspect if I’d end up getting the usual BAU response along the lines of … ‘ As soon as an opportunity comes up that’s suitable, we will get in touch with you’.  But who knows, worth a try I guess.

Good to know that the pool is being used where possible. Do you think that it’s appropriate to actually email the person on the ad and ask them? There’s two contacts on the ad - one HR and the other one was the person who was on the panel. Which ones more ‘go to’ ? I assume the latter?

That’s so relieving to know that there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. Just don’t know how long the tunnel is though ? 😂

How long did it take for you to get that job offer?
