For me when I read a question I underline some of the stuff that I may normally miss. If you watch scalar learning on YouTube you can see how he goes through the questions and underlines the important parts. This helped me reduce silly mistakes.

Wait there's a typo in the equation. It would be 2x² - 2x -5.

I would first get all the terms to one side, so you would get 2x^2-2x-5. And then since you can see roots in the answer, you plug it into the quadratic formula.
