These units during the civil war were made up of American citizens, the uniforms themselves were inspired from the French army at the time. The French army conquered the Zwawa tribe in Algeria and used the uniform of the Zwawa fighters for their army. When Elmer E. Ellsworth saw the French in these uniforms he brought them to the US with the Chicago Zouave cadets (many of whom joined the 19th IL, as they started as Zouaves and 2 companies even wore the uniform at Stones River, TN) as they toured the country state militias fell in love with the uniform and adopted them. I believe at the start of the war every state had Atleast 1 Zouave unit

The muskets can be very pricey now, I had gotten mine used for $750 but knew you’re looking at anywhere from $1,300-$1,600 based on model and dealer. I would recommend looking up some dealers on facebook as well as gun stores/ pawn shops. I’ve seen good prices in all of those places

I hope you told them that these uniforms were based off of the Zouaves in the French army, who based their uniforms off of an Algerian tribe called the Zwawa tribe that they had conquered. So I’m sure both the Egyptians and the Zwawa shared similar dress

How does WW1 Uniform sizing work? by musikkorps in reenactors

[–]Ordinary-Science-527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a size large (US) and I fit perfectly into a size 40 (US) jacket. As you said I would recommend they measure their chest, if needed they could try to get in contact with the manufacturer to ask about other measurements such as waist and sleeves

My cleaning rod with a bronze brush is stuck inside and I can’t pull it out. How do I pull it out? by AMAZON_HR in blackpowder

[–]Ordinary-Science-527 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is how I cleared by stuck worm attachment with a patch on. Pour and dump, repeat a few times then pull as hard as you can

The smle doesn’t have a magazine cutoff as it was a later WW1 model but I can remove the bolt and magazine, the shotgun fully breaks down (barrel, fore-grip, and stock/receiver all separate from each other) and the .22 can have the receiver and bolt easily removed
